PM and Interior Min: Govt working to address air pollution issue

 

   

BANGKOK(NNT) - The Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior have issued statements assuring members of the public that the administration is doing its best to address the issue of air pollution.

 

Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his concerns over the well-being of the people and instructed local provincial administrations to mitigate the problem, telling them to look after the health of their respective local residents.

 

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior advised people in affected areas to avoid engaging in prolonged outdoor activities and wear face masks when venturing outside. The agency also recommended youths, senior citizens and people suffering from respiratory illnesses seek medical attention as soon as they start exhibiting irregular respiratory symptoms.

 

The Minister also urged motorists to switch to public transportation instead of using their own vehicles.

 

Additionally, the Minister of the Interior instructed provincial administrations to discourage residents from outside burning and using slash and burn farming techniques.

Tell the people to stop burning <deleted>! If you lot want to get something right, focus your energies on that. And forget public transport; modern vehicles have CATs and whatnot. Have tuk-tuk/songthaew drivers sort their horrid, smoke-belching junkmobiles.

Wasn't this said exactly the same last year? Nothing effective is being done at all, e.g - those old buses, songthaews that were meant to be taken off the road are still seen everywhere in Bangkok, the burning is still openly done in the North.

Exactly, wheel out a few police to do a couple of photo shoot vehicle emission checks and try to look busy. it will be exactly the same next year. Useles bunch of ****wits.

Same old BS from the PM.  He is concerned about the pollution and says he is doing something about it but as you have read all he has done is to tell other people and agencies to sort out the problem !  His best solution is to tell people to stay indoors ! Doesn't polluted air go indoors too ??  What a useless leader.

Vehicles surely contribute to the pollution but just look at the charts, it peaks at night when less people are actually on the road. ( https://aqicn.org/city/bangkok )

I also agree that street level pollution by old vehicles is terrible and it could very well have a stronger health impact than the smog, but that's not the meat of the problem discussed here.

The burning season starts, the smog comes back. Thailand is redder than Australia on this 24hr fire map

The good news is that these empty speeches must be easier and easier for the PM to give.  He just has to dig out last years drivel and spout more empty promises.  Listening to the PM really is the equivalent of watching Pincitony Phil in groundhog day.  Meanwhile the population is ending up right where they want them, stupider and in poor health from pollution.  Seems money for endless military expansions but nothing to control pollution.

Yes we notice that too.  The peak is in the night even when its not burning season, although its certainly worse during burning season. We also notice some factory pollution at night.  I suspect the farmers, factories and others do their burning at night when the smoke is harder to see and harder to monitor - even if this useless government did any monitoring.

Maybe they could have a word regarding the recent burning up north of sugar cane crops... the farmer obviously thinks he's excused.
