So ‘refugees’ represent at most 145,000 of the 1,300,000 foreign nationals amongst a total of 8,400,000 people on universal credit. Meanwhile all foreign born recipients of universal credit represent a little under 16% of all recipients, lower than the 19% they represent of the whole population (immigrants are less likely to be on universal credit than someone born in the UK). 57% of Universal Credit recipients are female 43% male v 54% of immigrants are male, 46% female. Over one third of Universal Credit recipients are in full time work. Illegal immigrants do not receive universal credit. Maybe the question that needs asking is what is driving reliance on universal credit, it’s demonstrably not immigration. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/universal-credit-quarterly-statistics-29-april-2013-to-12-february-2026/universal-credit-quarterly-statistics-29-april-2013-to-12-february-2026 https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn06077/
