Trump considering visit to India next month

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is considering visiting India next month, for what would be his first visit to the world’s largest democracy since he took office three years ago, sources with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking to build close ties with Washington, had previously invited Trump to attend India’s annual Republic Day parade later this month, but the U.S. officials said it would clash with the president’s State of the Union address.

 

“There has been an open invitation for him to visit, both sides are working out the dates,” one of the sources said.

 

Another source said Trump could come in the second half of February and that he may visit a second city besides the national capital Delhi.

 

The Indian foreign ministry did not have an immediate comment on the proposed visit.

 

India and the United States have built close political and security ties, but in recent years trade frictions have come to the fore. Trump has frequently named India as one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world and withdrawn a key trade concession for that reason.

 

The two sides have been trying to work out a new and limited trade pact on lowering tariffs, but these negotiations have run into problems over broader issues of data privacy and controls over e-commerce.

Why would he want to do that? He can p1ss them off tweeting he doesn't have to move his fat butt over there in person to do it.

It's always good for the (now tainted) great democracies of India and the USA to build a closer alliance. But these particular  leader? Egads. Oh well. You work with what you've got.

Mrs T will look ok but Mr T in a turban messing up that dead animal on his head will be a sight not to be missed. 

Not the easiest place in the world to get a good cheeseburger. They may have to bring their own. Kind of a funny thought, imagining Trump eating a spicy curry.

Not going to happen. My guess is that we have seen the last of the Trump towers, and for that matter, probably the last of the management deals, with the Trump brand. His name is so radioactive around the world, I doubt any developer would want to touch it. Already, he has lost 17 out of 19 merchandising deals, and has not inked another major development deal since he has taken office. He was ingloriously kicked out of the Panama tower, as the partners could not book any of their hotel rooms, to save their lives. Since they got rid of the Trump name, they have begun doing well again. Nobody can lease out an apartment in his towers, his commercial prices have fallen off the cliff, and you cannot sell a condo that you own in his towers. Many have petitioned to have his name removed from the buildings. Not to mention daughter's biz going belly up. 

 

The policies so beloved by his base appear to have turned off a group just as dear to him – the wealthy who fuel his many businesses. “He can be very polarising. The brand has been diminished,” said Jeff Lotman, CEO of licensing firm Global Icons told the Associated Press. New York brand consultant Robert Passikoff put it more bluntly: “The Trump brand has lost its mojo.”
