Author Stephen King has said 'quality' is the only thing that matters when it comes to Oscar nominees

Stephen King has come under fire after saying the issue of diversity should not be a factor for Oscar voters.

The author, who nominates in three categories for the Academy Awards, said in a tweet that "only quality" matters.

His comments came after the Oscar nominations announcement on Monday, which revealed that only one non-white performer - British star Cynthia Erivo, for Harriet - was nominated in the acting categories.

And once again, the best director category featured an all-male line-up.

Why have an award for best writing, when it is based on social issues.

Perhaps they could work out a handicap system like golf. A straight white guy like Stephen King would be at par. Then those  identified as being from whatever perceived disadvantaged groups, could enter the contest at a level playing field. So a woman of color with some exotic variety of sexual ID, and perhaps coming from a non-western country and maybe even some type of disability, could have dozens of extra points added to her ranking so that she would be leagues ahead of Stephen King. from the beginning. Even if no one ever watched her screenplay.

That would be fair right?

I would think that an exotic woman of color might be the one at par for her beauty. Of course in Hollywood all the young girls and boys of all colors trying to get parts are exploited by the hairy old men like Weinstein in Hollywood so they would all get extra points no matter their color.

While I agree with King's assertion that "quality" is all that matters, I nevertheless can't forget that this was the guy who tweeted, in the middle of the attack by Democrats on Justice Kavanaugh, "I believe the woman."

You can't get much more woke than that....

Like most things in our everyday life, diversity is forced upon the public when we should be congratulating merit, honesty and excellence.  Not because you are a woman or a man or something called people of colour. What-ever-that-is!

King should have held his ground, and said he makes no apologies, for weak kneed, PC people. I meant what I said, and I would say it again. He is worth $400 million. You want to boycott him, go for it. You think that is going to have any impact on his lifestyle?

Call me notpcmike. A real badge of honor.

Does "non white" mean black?

I think the problem lies with producers. Put the diverse actors in the films. They have every right not to do that no doubt. But that is where i think the problem is. How can you criticize the academy when they see 100 actors and 85% of them are white, perhaps because casting in such a way has been shown to sell more tickets.

Is this significant in some/any way?

Probably, and I agree women generally can't compete against men on a level playing field..

As for race, I don't even bother to watch 'black culture' movies any more. Not because I have anything against black people, I just have no interest in watching 'Yo man' drug dealing or 'Mah ancestors were slaves' culture.

By what criteria does one define quality in the film industry? is it only entertainment value, or is social commentary a part of the art?

Does the entertainment industry affect culture? and as such has a responsibility on it's content?

The entertainment industry has only one responsibility and that is to make money, period.
