Daylight robbery! Two Thais pay nearly 800 baht for a 5 km journey on Bangkok motorcycle taxis

A Thai went on popular site Pantip to complain that they and a friend had paid 760 baht for a short hop on a couple of Bangkok motorcycle taxis. 

 

They called it daylight robbery, reported Kapook. 

 

Apparently they had arrived at Victory Monument on a minivan and had to get to the Mahanak crossroads that was 4.7 km away. 

 

They decided to take a bus but the "Viabus" app indicated that the bus was a long way away so they next thought Grab taxi or regular taxi was the answer to their travel dilemma. 

 

The friends thought 50 or 60 baht should be enough. 

 

Then they approached a motorcycle taxi rank. 

 

After a sharp intake of breath and muttering about the state of the traffic one of the "wins" reluctantly agreed to take them saying it would be about 100 baht. 

 

They took off on two motorcycles and were surprised that there was absolutely no traffic and the journey took barely ten minutes. 

 

On arrival at their destination one of the wins winked to the other and said that would 380 baht thank you. 

 

The poster said hang on.....190 baht each for that short journey, that's a rip off. 

 

No, said the win, that is 380 baht each, 760 total.

 

One of the passengers paid in cash but the other had to transfer the money. 

 

They said that the wins were not registered riders and raced off in a hurry after getting their money.

Time to put meters on the motorbike taxis na.

The mind boggles at what the ferang price would have been!

First time I was in country I had a lady over one at my condo one evening.  At some point she talked me into going to join with some friends of hers for food.  We got two motorbike taxis to take us there and did not negotiate beforehand.  Anyway, we arrived and they wanted 100 baht each and the girl lost her mind!  She got loud and started to make a scene and they backed the price down to 50 baht, total...  was an eye-opener for me because I thought 100 baht each was a good price comparative to what I had already paid in the couple for similar trips in the weeks prior to that.  In the story it sounds like these taxi guys were not even remotely legit and the money is so extreme that it is questionable that it even happened.  I did have a tuk tuk driver take me on an un-negotiated detour in Bkk once.  Took me to a dark parking lot and turned off the machine.  Then told me there were good ladies upstairs...  I got fairly wound up and told him if he didnt drive me to the destination I had specified, Immediately, that I would knock him out and drive myself!  My mistake for not greeting him in Thai, I suppose!  Then, when we did get to the place, he wanted to charge me 250 for a ride not even worth 100.  I said no way and gave him 100.  He said he would call police and I said ok, I have video of when you took me to dark parking lot.  His eyes got big, and he shut up and took the 100 baht.  Who says you can't learn important things from a Pattaya bargirl?!!!

Couple of days ago I was asking the fare to Central ladphrao and the guys said " 500Tb" heavy traffic. I was flabbergasted and thought better take the bus 138 as the taxi rank had a very long queue. 10 baht all the way to Ladphrao Hospital, thank you. Then taxi to my soi????

They thought they did... about 100 baht.

But being youngsters the Win riders took advantage!

Im not sure but I believe the Win are only allowed to go short distances and are restricted to their own area.

And that is why ride hailing apps likeGrab and Uber are becoming so popular. I’ve had enough of being cheated. Tuk tuks could have had meters years ago, taxis could have been forced to use the meters in places like Pattaya and Phuket, but the cheating and commissions would have been stopped.

Should have called the cops.

Lol I agree Usually its the ferang who get stung by these robbers on wheels but here we have it two unlucky Thais got stung 

Often happens to rural Thais coming to Bangkok for the first time, being scared of everything. They fear beatings or worse if not paying up. 

Sounds more to me like they spent all the money on their phones, games , beer and a night out and had to think of some excuse for not having mum's extra money they had borrowed

And on the rare occasion when I take a bike and the win rider does this to me, I always like to remind them that if the traffic wasn't bad, I wouldn't be using them. Who wants to pay 6 or 7 times more than the bus to sit uncomfortably on the back of a bike when there's no traffic?

They did. They agreed on 'about 100 baht', which seems quite all right for a 10-minute ride. But instead of being fleeced for an amount almost 4x that, and, obviously, a ripp-off, they should have called the cops to sort it out.

In Penang, Malaysia, taxi business is over 90% Grab now. it is the only thing the locals will use and it is less than half the price of a metered taxi. The standard taxi drivers still refuse to use the meter, and now they sit empty on the sides of the road, complaining and whimpering. A Grab driver pointed them out as we traveled down the road. He also pointed to everyone on the road using Grab.  Here is the future of Bangkok if this keeps up.

Thais are equal opportunity scammers. They scam each other, as they scam foreigners, whenever there is a chance. That Thais don't steal from, or don't scam each other, is a fairy tale, that many Thais, however, like to believe.
