Long term cheap(ish) accommodation

Recommended Posts

A UK friend is looking to come over to CM on either long-term ED visa or to teach English (and or both if possible) and is looking for cheap (<6000Bht/month) single! Long term accommodation.
Looking for the city area between the moat and the river if possible, but other city areas could be considered.
Does anyone know of any estate agents who deal in the above or have any Guest Houses they could recommend.

PS; Please do not go off topic and highjack the topic with discussions regarding the ED/Teaching visa aspects of the post.

I misunderstood my friends "directions" or lack of them. He is looking for anything from MAYA Shopping Mall area to the river.

It certainly opens up the options I would imagine!

Sorry about the confusion.

There are many fairly new apartment buildings in the Santitham area.  Many are for college students and will not rent to foreigners, but some will accept foreigners as long term residents.  I know the Empress Apartments will accept foreigners and charge 5000 baht/month for a clean room with aircon, wifi and a small refrigerator.  Don't get one with a view, because that comes with noise from the surrounding student bars.  Instead, get one with a view of a quiet interior courtyard.

There are other similar places in Santitham at the same price point.  They don't have websites in English and the best way to find them is to walk around, look and make inquiries.

I guess it depends on what he intends when you say long term. Many very cheap rooms come without essentials such as fridge/microwave/tv/decent bathroom. He can buy the first 3 for about 20k but may be better off paying for a renovated furnished room.

Many teachers stay at PP condo, a bit over the river though, past the rail station. Fully renovated studios with the stuff I mentioned plus a decent bed, wardrobe, sofa. desk etc etc for around 5000 a month.

And/or try Perfect Homes Agency who I always find good for rentals. info etc.

Good luck

Have a look at:

(There is no point though trying to contact the inexpensive places via the website or email. Call them or talk to them in person. Sometimes the information in Thai is more extensive, so also check the Thai language version, when you found a place and use Google Chrome/Translate.)

Several good recommendations above. Chiang Mai works well in two stages: 1. Find a nice habitable guest house on a weekly basis and 2. Use that time to wander and find a suitable extended stay. Chiang Mai seems to work best for friends in similar situations once their feet are on the ground here.
