THAI takes added precautions as virus concerns deepen

Thai Airways International (THAI) is implementing measures to boost passenger confidence amid the spread, mainly in central China, of the disease now being referred to as the “novel coronavirus”.

Flight Lt Pratana Patanasiri, THAI’s vice president for aviation safety, security and standards, said the actions were based on directives issued by the Public Health Ministry and Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand.

He said passengers were now being more carefully screened and ground-service measures had been instituted.

Also taking effect are measures covering inflight service, aircraft preparation, interior cleaning and disinfection, employee precautions, cargo and commercial mail transportation and meal preparation.

Pratana said employees on duty must “take heed of personal hygiene, such as wearing protective masks and gloves and pay attention to passenger symptoms while onboard”.

Such precautions are nothing to sneeze about.

As there have been suspected cases as far afield as USA Scotland Australia they would need to screen all incomers not just flights from Wuhan etc

A person at a  land border could have been almost anywhere in the world during the few days when there are no symptoms.

"Flu viruses incubate very rapidly - you tend to get symptoms two to three days after being infected, but coronaviruses take much longer, ” said Professor Neil Ferguson, a disease outbreak scientist at Imperial College London"

I'd imagine  tourism may be more profitable in the short term than long term public health , I wonder which will take priortity public good or profit?

I am respectfully begging for the People of Thailand to be informed by their Government's Health Officials that the following simple practice will help to protect countless numbers of the population.  It is a medical / scientific fact that infectious virus / bacterial organisms commonly enter the human body through the eyes.  When a person rubs their eyes with their fingers the transfer occurs.  The capillaries of the eyes quickly afford a pathway into a person's bloodstream.  The current 'smog' pollution and sweat caused by heat, all contribute to the practice of rubbing one's eyes; this includes the mere handling of money, and handles / door knobs.  People must be made aware of this and urged to wash their hands with water and soap before touching their faces if at all possible.

That just means 'a newly discovered coronavirus'.  I'm sure they'll get a handle on it soon!

I wonder just how seriously Thailand are taking this.  It's rising rapidly in China with currently no treatment in sight and the real risk of it mutating.  20 million people have been quarantined (3 cities) as of Wednesday.  It's starting to appear all over the world.  There are several cases being monitored in the UK where 25% of students are Chinese.

The Chinese government are now admitting to 830 cases and 25 dead which experts believe is well understated.  Only a week ago, the Chinese government were talking of very small numbers.

The Thai government say they 'have it under control'.  Really?  There are reports from expat/tourist arrivals over the last couple of days that couldn't see any precautions/screening carried out on the multiple queues of Chinese at immigration.

Will this be as big as SARS?  Nobody knows and until a treatment has been developed, it could escalate very quickly.

It needs to be recognised that, unlike flu' that has an incubation period of a couple of days, a coronovirus has a much longer incubation period of around 2 weeks.  During the incubation period, there are no symptoms and no amount of screening will detect it.

Everything is under control until it is not.  Then the next stage for the authorities is first, deny

being wrong, then Panic!  The rich will flee in private jets, the rest will suffer.

Welcome to Thailand, quarantine straight ahead.  Have a nice stay!

They learnt their lesson though! Fukishima was far worse! now they just stay silent about the ongoing catastrophe!

If there are four cases in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland it seems possible there will already be some here.

They have a couple of precautions in place already, namely dimming the cabin in the day so people won't move or prevent the attendants from having their flight long gossip session and only serving beverages when expressly called. Decreases the movements in the cabin by 99%, at least.

There already are.  4 cases confirmed in Thailand.  There'll be many more!

And according to report yesterday in the other paper, the Thai Health Ministry has said that all four cases involved persons who lived in or had recently visited Wuhan.

So, the airways are going to ramp up their hygiene procedures, etc., and at the same time the government are still trying to increase the number of "tourists" coming from the country where the problem originated.  Does that make sense to anybody?  Has Thailand now developed a new HUB, the HUB of ridiculous contradictions and denials?  At least one arrival from China has been found to carry the new virus.  How, did he get through the supposedly heightened screening procedures, if they do in fact exist?

'nuf sed

Thailand came up with the cure for the Sars Virus and saved the world pretty quickly so I'm they will be all over this corona virus

any chance to disparage thailand.  and then we wonder why Thais don't like as?

Really?

There still is no cure for SARS.  It vanished after containment.
