Video is evidence of the health of the coral reef in Koh Phi Phi, says Thai media

Thai media 77kaoded said that a video of a dive by a ham radio group in Koh Phi Phi showed the health of the marine ecosystem. 

 

The trip was to Loh Sama Bay that is behind the more famous Maya Bay that has been closed to tourists for the best part of two years to help the area recover from mass tourism. 

 

Loh Sama Bay can still be visited.

How long does it take coral to grow?  This is a complex subject as it depends on the technology used,  Generally coral can grow at a rate of up to 0.3-2 cm a year for massive corals and 10 cm/year for branching corals. As well, a major contributing factor is dependent upon keeping people aka tourist away from the sites so the growth is not disturbed.  One technique that had found to be beneficial is the use of electricity and also establishing small colonies of coral on platforms which are put into locations were they will not be disturbed, except by other sea creatures but even here there is a problem as some fish, etc, eat the stuff.  However, can it truly be said by Thai officials that after only two years the coral colonies around Kho Phi Phi is regenerating at a substantial rate.  One photograph of what appears to be a giant unspecified object is insufficient evidence to support their claim.
