But why does it have to be a BMW? Why not a basic Toyota with all the technology attached to it. Also, when these cars need maintenance and repairs, it costs a lot more compared to a locally made Toyota, etc.

This is a huge waste of tax payers' money.

You cannot have 'TM30 Busters' riding around in a Toyota, that would just look silly. What if they needed to engage in a high speed pursuit.

Steve McQueen had a Mustang in Bullitt. This should at least be the benchmark.

Lots of money spent, lots of hard work and for what? A series of very minor infringements. Given the crime rate across the country, you have to ask if the money and effort wouldn't be better spent policing the local population perhaps?

Absolutely,

But the problem is that would be the sensible thing to do.

These  BMW's are not M5's.

Just your average underperforming overpriced 5 series.

More and more expats are "voting with their feet" and going to countries that actually welcome foreigners - Vietnam, Laos, Philippines etc. I feel sorry for the expats with family/ assets here who are stuck with Thailand.

Nobody wants to live in a police state where the innocent are still treated like criminals.

You can add UK to that list.

I can afford to stay here without a problem, but a business opportunity is taking shape that will take me to the UK for at least nine months of the year.

I am simply full up with the stupidity, xenophobia and Thais still believing the government bile that this country is the best thing since sliced bread when they are driving the country into the ground with their knee jerk reactions and stupid policies that are never thought through.

Never proactive, always reactive.

Seriously though, what a horrible place this is becoming to live.

Encouraging people to call up and 'report' foreigners, cars creeping about surveilling foreigners, people that have foreigners living with them being investigated, fingerprints being taken on entry to the country, etc.

Thailand has adopted an authoritarian style which is universally despised.

It looks as though it's role model is North Korea.

Last year in UK I took an M6 out on the track - 560 bhp! It was so fast it reversed time enabling me to get back inside the 24 hours to submit my TM 30.

All this will escallate even more, just the beginning.  Thailand will virtually have eyes on ALL foreigners 24/7 so nobody can hide here.  It's a great idea.  THailand will be one of the safest countries in the world.  Now, what to do about the road fatality, that's another story.

C,mon, you’re asking him questions that the IQ of the average Thai simply isn’t sufficient to answer.

And what will they do about the epidemic levels of drug use and violent crime by their own citizens?

Why?
1. The huge face value it gives to these corrupt cops chasing foreigners
2. Brown envelope weight when buying BMW's vs. Toyota
Yes, surely a waste of tax payers' money but when did they care? Top three priorities are filling own pockets.

Well that apparently is what Big Joke did and look where that got him or maybe he questioned whose snout should be allowed into the TROUGH.

Doesn't matter, if it did they would have acted by now.  How old is the drug issue??? Think!  The coronavirus is on fire, and the world is taking it seriously.  Action speaks louder than words.  But drugs and road fatalities in Thailand, who cares, doesn't matter.  Overstays and coronavirus will always trump drugs, therefore, action will be aggressive.  Don't believe me, just look, read the news! But sure, i agree with you.  All of this <deleted> needs to be stopped - NOW!

Thaivisa notes that sacked former immigration chief Lt-Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakpan was known to have raised criticism of the BMW car scheme that he viewed as a waste of taxpayer's money

I'm in full agreement with him. I think he was a smart guy that would've helped bring down government waste and that is why the government got rid of him

Be fair... Thailand is challenged with keeping up with the rest of the world, and my dear departed father taught me never to "mock the afflicted" !!

Then there was the 'alien', as the government calls us, simply waiting to pick up his kid outside a school who was escorted home by the immigration police and his passport and permission to be in the country demanded. Nice, hmm? Guilty until proved innocent.

We just need to remember that the people in charge are working under orders given by a group that took control by dismissing a freely elected government, and then wrote a new constitution to ensure that even in a 'free and fair' election they could never lose power. But the people of Thailand, the real people and not those who make the rules, hate the situation as much as us aliens. That's what my wife tells me anyway.

So what was the price to the government for a fleet of them?

They would have got a fleet discount regardless of who they purchased them from, making the cost still expensive compared to Toyota etc.

As for those saying they are manufactured here, no they are not, they are assembled here from imported parts and they do attract a higher tax due to this.

I can almost guarantee that each base car cost at least 1m THB more per unit than the equivalent Toyota or Honda, insurance costs are higher, tyres cost lots more due to runflats, they MAY have managed to get them with BSI, so servicing included for the first 3 years, depending of course on the KMs not exceeding the allowance.

To cap it all, having previously owned 3 BMW, they are not very reliable, lots of small issues.
