Thailand’s Public Health Ministry has warned of possible outbreaks of coronavirus in locations popular with Chinese tourists, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi.

Dr Tanarak Palipat, deputy director of the ministry's Disease Control Department, said if an outbreak occurs in Thailand, it could start with a ‘local transmission’.

Dr Tanarak cited the recent case in Japan, where a bus driver who had not visited Wuhan but drove a group of Chinese tourists from the region at the centre of the outbreak.

“Areas in Thailand with large numbers of Chinese tourists such as Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Krabi are being closely monitored by health officials,'' said Dr Tanarak.

According to the Public Health Ministry, while the coronavirus situation is a concern, it remains under control.

The message to the public is to remain calm and continue as normal, but take some precautionary measures, such as regularly washing hands, using hand sanitizer and choosing to wear a face mask, although this is optional.

Tourists are advised that it is very much business as normal and that while the coronavirus remains under control, there is no need for foreigners visiting the kingdom to change their travel plans.

Dr Tanarak also told reporters on Wednesday that of the 14 cases confirmed at the time of publishing, 5 patients have already returned home, while 9 others remain in hospital.

Most of those infected are elderly, some had ongoing health issues. All of the patients are from or had recently visited Wuhan and there had been no cases of local transmission in Thailand.

As a precaution, a further 158 people have been monitored in Thailand’s Patient Under Investigation (PUI) programme, but 62 of those have already been discharged.

The news comes after authorities on Wednesday announced that tour guides and others working in the tourism industry such as massage or spa workers will also undergo screening.

“We have to monitor Thais in professions that come in contact with foreign tourists, particularly the Chinese,” said Dr Tanarak.

This was another precautionary measure, officials said, necessary in order to prepare for a ‘worst case’ scenario.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who inspected screening procedures at Suvarnabhumi airport on Wednesday said Thailand was “100 precent in control of the situation”.

And at the same time, Thailand has chosen to not make their infected numbers public anymore, until on the 7th of Feb. Amazing!!!!!

So many Thai people will think the situation is under control, due to the number 14 being static for days. This will spread the virus even more. For sure Thailand will be facing not only international pressure, but also a huge and uncontrollable outbreak in their cities. Once they finally report their numbers, then prepare for a HUGE number.

Well done Thailand. You screwed up again!

can you send me a link to this article pls if it is in English. would love to read this. why on earth would they do smthing so daft?? I do believe you, just want to read it.thxx

Statistically speaking - as can be shown by the numbers already recorded in Thailand - this country would be second to China in fatalities caused by the Coronavirus. And the situation is aggravated by the continuing nonchalance of the Thai government. Which will be unsustainable, IMO.

Given that there are thousands of Chinese tourists visiting each week - screened or not - the risk of contagion is high, IMO. Only N95/9 fitted face masks, wrap around glasses, and wearing gloves at all times outside the home, would diminish the risk, providing of course not to visit hospitals or busy malls, restaurants etc until the worst is known  - in about another 10 days or so.

Best advice for the very young, elderly and already otherwise ill people, is to remain at home with stocked up supplies from the local markets and shops for another fortnight.

Anyway, now will be under my blanket after tomorrow's big shop, and good luck to all. Keep healthy.

The death toll rose to 170 on Thursday – up from 132 reported on Wednesday, a rise of 29%.

No surprise. Their labs got swamped by mere 100 people undergoing diagnosis. It's obvious there are hundreds if not thousands walking around with the virus already. Full on denial and face saving going on at the expense of people's lives.

1- Coronavirus originates from China

2 - Chinese tourists swamp all popular tourist spots across Thailand

3 - Hence, "possible outbreaks of coronavirus in most popular tourist spots" could be in the books

I figure it really takes a "Dr" to arrive at such an earth-shattering conclusion.

Thank you, Dr Tanarak, we are all very relieved to realize that we have such a bright mind as yourself heading the Ministry of Public Health.

But how do you reconcile your warning with the fact that our Great Leader announced under considerable fanfare only a couple of days ago that Thailand was "100% safe"? Are you questioning the Great Leader's infallible insight?

That would be blasphemy

The health office in Chiang Mai said on Monday (January 27) that the Public Health Ministry had instructed provincial health offices to stop reporting the numbers of suspected and confirmed coronavirus cases and wait for the official announcement from the ministry after China announced a ban of all flight to the province after February 7.

It is so daft that it is unbelievable! But of course it is the best way to hide an outbreak and ensure tourist money is still coming in.

One can only hope that there has been something lost in translation.

And the provincial health offices can't declare new cases by themselves but rather have to go through health ministry HQ.

Other than that would be truly horrific...and stupid

The Thai government’s main concern here is exhibiting slavish loyalty and obsequious devotion to the bosses in Beijing. So naturally they will do whatever China tells them to do. Safeguarding Thai lives doesn't matter to the generals, but keeping Chinese money flowing into their pockets is of paramount importance.

True, but so far no new numbers out of Thailand: https://ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/eng/situation.php

I worry they do not have nice numbers to present and are struggling with how to annonce this. Yesterday, they warned about a possible outbreak. This could be the next annoncement together with the new numbers.
