Thai Roads: Yet more carnage as "microsleep" blamed again

Picture: Daily News

A totally innocent man was killed early yesterday morning after a deliveryman who had been driving for nine hours without a break fell asleep at the wheel and plowed into the back of his pick-up.

Fifty eight year old Jirawat was waiting to make a U-turn behind a bus used for transporting workers.

It was just after 5 am.

He was propelled into the bus after 21 year old Hansa behind the wheel of a Hino truck went into the back of him.

The accident happened in Bangsaothong district on Thepparat Road by the TOA U-turn.

Hansa said he had just come from Chachoengsao and was on his way home. He admitted driving since 8 pm on Sunday without a break and said he fell asleep behind the wheel.

This is known in Thai as "lap nai" and referred to nowadays as a microsleep.

Hansa was arrested and charged with negligent driving causing death.

Instead of being guilty of driving while too tired, he is actually a victim of microsleep. No guilt, no loss of face. It could happen to anyone.

And again these criminals ....

Here in Thailand too, evolution should go towards improvement ... but ...

1,000 Baht fine for him, 5,000 Baht fine for his employer, 1 Million Baht Insurance payout to family, Big Wreath with company name on it, lots of Wai's and he's back driving for nine hours without sleep again next week !

This is known as sheer ignorance and the charge should be murder!

It is one giant demolition derby!  I am constantly amazed at how the vehicles disintegrate.

Around my way I am constantly amazed at how many pick ups actually hold together on the road.

I see one often that goes around collecting scrap metals. When fully loaded it's quite difficult to see where the load stops and the truck starts.

Same as "bad rain" making road dangerous.

No vehicles to my knowledge are fitted with Tachographs - these are standard issue throughout EU for goods vehicles and passenger carriers.

On Samui today the roads were like ice, following a light shower. the road surfaces in Thailand are not capable of taking different weather conditions.

Many vehicles in Thailand have substandard shock absorption characteristics, in particular pick up trucks.

Doesn’t a murder charge require premeditation?

THis displays an enormous lack of knowledge of both human behaviour and road safety.

it has little or no relevance to the incident but says a lot about the aggressive and unthinking nature of the poster.
