Popular Post Iron Tongue
Without training, nobody should complain about the police response. Until very recently, it was SOP to: first contain a shooter, try to contact him/her, evaluate situation, take further action if necessary. This was before the rise of mass shooters and domestic terrorists. Only very recently has the USA and some European agencies adopted "respond immediately & neutralize" policies in active shooting situations. Doubt this has trickled-down to other countries yet. In this case, the shooter was a well-trained and armed (armored?) professional who understood tactics and had barricaded himself. Someone capable of making head shots and expecting to die is not an easy arrest.

SMEinBangkok
The armchair warriors and sad old men that make up this forum are a constant source of embarrassment to expats living in this country. So many tactical experts and not a single consultant payment for the lot of them....haha! Hard to believe their expertise goes unrecognized.

But you are right, the first Thai girl I met did say I was a hansum man and all those I meet nowadays still say the same. That’s probably why my gf has me on a leash whenever we go out.

rkidlad
Sorry, but he shouldn't have been there. They should have special tactical units for this. They should be solely responsible for this kind of operation. He was inserting himself into a situation where he didn't need to be. He's the chief of police. What's the point in sending the police chief to risk his life when there should already be specialist police who work in a team and have had all the correct training. With all the bad press he's had recently, he's used this opportunity to promote himself. It's ugly and opportunistic. Call me crazy, but if I were a member of the forces in the department store, I wouldn't want anyone putting my pictures up while I'm doing such an important and intense job. It isn't about me. It's about the poor people stuck in the building and the poor people who died.

I do agree with you, and not at all say that your way of thinking is wrong. it´s same like you do not se a CEO of a supermarket chain behind the exit as a cashier. There is one thing, though. He is probably one of the most well trained police officers in Thailand, as well as one of the guys with most experience in most of the active fields. However, you are right. He is the national police chief, and it is not his role to engage in any kind of active police field work.

Grumpy John
Unless you've had a bullet or 3 wizz past you at close quarters I don't think people are qualified to condemn the cops for keeping undercover. I am assuming the shooter had no compunction to drop a cop as he had already shown he was willing and able to do so.
