The government might extend the Songkran festival to stimulate the national economy.

According to a govemment source, there is a proposal to extend the holidays during the Songkran festival by two days -- from April 13-17 -- which would enable people to extend their holidays by another two days on Saturday (April 18) and Sunday (April 19), a total of nine holidays.

The relevant agencies are expected to propose to the meeting together with the economic stimulus measures such as "Eat, Shop, Spend campaign phase 4".

Creating a shopping atmosphere is expected to help the economy which faces many economic risk factors such as the outbreak of the new coronavirus, drought, delay in implementing the budget, including the Korat mass shootings in Nakhon Ratchasima, which have had a huge impact on businesses and the tourism industry.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak on Wednesday (February 12) also mentioned the extended Songkran festival idea. Somkid said that he was prepared to propose to the Cabinet to extend the long holidays since people will have to return to their hometown and travel, which will boost tourism and help the economy.

In this regard, he has coordinated with Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, to consider adding special holidays in the first and second quarters of the year to encourage Thai people to travel domestically during the first half of the year to alleviate the impact of the virus outbreak.

They've really got their thinking caps on now.....why have five deadly days when you can have seven!

  • Popular Post

The only thing it's gonna lift is more people dead.

I like songkrahn so yeeeeeeeaaaaaaahh !

To extend songkran holidays may fight the water shortage too.

Who brought up the idea? Was it Anutin?

Rename it to Wuhanfest, ought to do the trick.

This is all assuming that the coronavirus is totally under control, or eradicated !

If not, Thailand could be on one long holiday by then.

As usual, an idea that makes very little economical sense other than HOPING people spend more money.

A - Hoping mostly local people to spend more money on food, alcohol etc that perhaps they haven't got

B - Waste more water even though there is a severe drought

C - Enable more people to die on the roads during the 'Deadly Days' (more like every day)

D - Shut offices and companies etc for two more days even though there are umpteen national holidays per year

I know the philosophy they have in mind. “If Your not working then your spending your money doing whatever”

Trouble is there’s not enough well off people with money to throw around. However a boom in water pistol sales

may be about the best stimulus they’ll get.

Yes which money they can spend when there are do many people without any income ?

I very much doubt factories and plants will pay any attention to this, unless demand is down and it benefits them to close. We're very busy and there's no chance of us closing for these 2 days.

It will mainly be government workers that benefit from this, plus it may help spread out some of the congestion getting back into BKK from the provinces if people come back on different days.

Yes, brilliant idea. Given we have one of the worst droughts for ages, lets throw even more water down the drain shall we?

Perhaps the easiest would be to put donation boxes everywhere. At the airport, in shopping malls, at tourist attractions and so on.

It is already 7 days in Pattaya with the last day being the busiest.

Lets just make it 2 weeks total should bring in many more people.

Hope eveyone enjoys it, I will be off to the Philippines.

One of their best ideas to date. Let's increase the length of time the roads are slippery and wet, so people can have more accidents and overrun hospitals that much more. Also let's increase the amount of time people are packed together throwing around water to spread any viruses more easily, and also notably in a drought situation. 9/10 idea, I back it

Sucks. I saw Songkran April 12-15 on the calendar and got a ticket to fly out April 11 return 16. Budget airline can't change.

Great no longer 7 deadly days of Songkran now 9 deadly days and reservoirs emptied too.

There is no wonder at all to me as to why Thailand ceases to be competitive on the Global Market Stage.

The people just stand with their hands out for Gov,t money as soon as the going gets tough, and the weak Government gives in to appease them.

Truly pathetic

"Eat, Shop, Spend campaign phase 4".

Yet everyone take an extended holiday.... dont see the logic myself.... the way things are going if kung flu continues its march everything will be on a forced holiday already..

Could be trouble in the Philippines about that time. Duterte has just given notice to the United States to cancel its VFA and clear out in 180 days. Duterte and company busy selling the country to the Chinese. Faster than Thailand is.

They must be getting desperate.

Talkin about an event that is 2 long months away.

In the meantime, a potential pandemic is marching fairly unchecked.

I will leave it there..

Songkran is a wonderful time in BKK.  Very little traffic on the roads.  Extend songkran to a month.

  • Popular Post

how are the debt-laden thais supposed to spend, spend, spend if they lose another two days wages?

  • Popular Post

Two new public holidays added last year, I think one the year before. Plus the ad hoc days. Surely more public holidays than most other countries in the world.

Lucky they don't add a new Constitution Day holiday every time Thailand has a new constitution.

  • Popular Post

Contrary, they should scrap the whole damn holiday, keep working, save water, less traveling and less accidents.

  • Popular Post

Just when i thought it could not get any more stupid the Government come out with this gem,

I reckon they are really having a laugh between them, must be some prize to see who comes up with the best "worst" idea and see if the press print it, like a permanent April fools day.
