Burglaries, police inactivity force Canadian/Thai couple out of Thailand - they had 1M baht at home "waiting for exchange rate to improve"

Apart from the odd 100bht my gf has lifted from my wallet at night, never had anything stolen from my home in Thailand.

If I kept cash at home, it would at least have been put in a small safe.

40k in a drawer ......... madness.

I would have suspected my gf/wife.

Someone other than the gf/wife knew that that money was there.

A small safe can be bought for 5,000-8,000 Baht, I've had a few.

Never keep that which you cannot afford to lose in an unsecured location.

A twist, my Thai relatives thought the maid was dishonest because someone had left 5,000Baht in a pocket but maid never mentioned finding it. They confronted her and she responded that she had found the 5,000 and had left it on the kitchen table.

So they set up small cameras in the laundry and kitchen are left 3,000Baht in a pocket. Same evening they checked the camera recording and there was clear video of the Thai wives loudmouth middle aged lady boy brother taking the 3,000Baht from the kitchen table.

The Thai husband called ladyboy to the kitchen and confronted him then played the video.

But before playing the video the husband told lady boy that 6,000Baht plus 3,000Baht had disappeared.  Ladyboy responded quickly 'mai mai baet parn'.

The husband told him to pack his bag instantly which he did. Husband told ladyboy to leave the yard and walk to the road to get a bus and never return.

Husband picked up the bag inside the yard and threw it out on middle of the soi.

Never seen again. Family apologized to the maid.

With such a small safe the thief has to carry a heavier load. That's not polite.

The police know who has done this crime. The money is long gone. They should have offered the police a 50K reward for return of the money and property.

no cctv ? inside or outside the house ?

"Whether Canada would be safer than Thailand regarding burglary is a moot point, notes Thaivisa. Online statistics from the World Data Atlas suggest that in 2010 Canada had 578 burglaries per 100,000 people. In the same year knoema.com suggested the Thai rate was just 9.6 per 100,000.

And the Thai burglary rate had almost halved by 2016."

I am not Canadian but I don't believe these numbers at all.

Inconsistent story.

So many "business men" in Thailand. Wow. Being such a "business man", the Canadian should know that he can open a foreign currency account and avoid hiding his money under a pillow.

Good luck elsewhere. If they want to move each time they are victims of a theft, then there'll be not many countries left after a couple of years.

Is the opening a foreign currency account that easily done?

Asking as I used to have both but was told I had to decide either THB or STG, but I couldn't have both so I had to close one.

Now they are off back to Canada - though online stats suggest that burglaries may be worse there than Thailand.

In gated communities...wow, thought those were safer in Canada...

A few years ago we had stuff going missing around the house. Petty cash that was not the amount I remembered and even a beer going missing from the fridge. We bought an alarm clock spycam from Pantip. It was incredible. There were 2 separate thieves, both who we knew very well. One one occasion they even came to steal at the same time and shocked each other, then got into an argument. We confronted them directly, and it stopped. Just shocking the brazen-ness of some people.

Best of luck to this couple.

For sure his wife blabbed to people that they had that cash in the house. First I can't believe someone would be so stupid to keep it in the house in this day and age but second, how would the thieves know to rob that house and find the cash?

Either she is in on it or she told one to many people about their stash since most Thai low so women can't keep their mouths shut.

And it doesn't matter if you are in Thailand, Europe or the US, rarely do police investigate home burglaries if nobody was hurt. It's almost impossible to find the culprits.

Now he can move with her to Canada and she can later divorce him and rob him again.

just come to mind... family, relatives, close friends, bragging about it

Our property developer guarantees a refund for everything stolen in our house...yes we have a lot of security...

An alternative solution is the MK1 German Shepherd security system, who's always delighted to dance with the odd intruder (actual photo of my big beautiful boy)...

Good luck with suing the estate company to get the money back. They will end up spending at least $10,000 on a retainer, and it will take years. And will a judge rule in their favor? Slim chance of that.

Where did they have the money hidden? Was it in a high quality safe, that was bolted to the floor? I would never leave a large amount of money, or valuables in the house, that were not securely locked up, and my neighborhood is super safe. Sounds fairly cavalier to me. And the chances of the same thing (based of their careless behavior) happening in Canada is at least as high as here. Plus, it sounds like an insider job and not the least bit random.

Sounds like inside jobbie to me, knowing they were out

Cannot understand people who own or even rent a property and don’t have insurance to cover damage or theft it costs me less than 16,000 baht a year for 10 million cover and that includes all types of flooding as I live more or less on the beach

I suspect Canada's crime data is more complete than Thailand's.

Inside job

They were/are fools for leaving that kind of money in a house, unsecured, while away on holiday. Stupidity at its finest.

Interrogate the wife, me thinks!

He may have took the money to Pattaya , had a really good holiday and needed an explanation to his Wife about where the money has gone ?

Keep money under a pile of books. Thief has probably never picked one up in his/her life.

It would be an interesting experiment to let the wife/gf or a family member/s know that you keep $40K in the house, then see who shows up on camera when you are away.

"On February 1st a man climbed over the wall of the housing estate and cut his way into the rear of their property. He was dressed like a company employee might be. (How she knew all this was not explained in the story, notes Thaivisa)."

  Key quote.

Yes because the reporter did not bother to ask the question. Most likely either there was a witness or they have some CCTV footage.

On the subject of burglaries per 100,000 population, the truth is that many burglaries are either not reported in Thailand because people know they have to pay the cops to do anything.

"Data Atlas suggest that in 2010 Canada had 578 burglaries per 100,000 people"   10 years ago

"In the same year knoema.com suggested the Thai rate was just 9.6 per 100,000."   I think they omitted to say per month, per week or maybe even per Day!!

"And the Thai burglary rate had almost halved by 2016." from when to when??

Just another instance of quoted figures not being right

more holes in that story than swiss cheese

Mmmmm a fool and his money are soon parted.

I knew a chap who told me many moons ago, putting in cctv in or around your house is not worth the 30 - 40 000Baht.

A year later his house was broken into and more than 10 Million Bahts worth of money, jewlery etc was stolen.

Now when I see him, I always mention that 40 thousand Baht instalation.

Fools.

some people fail to amaze me. you are inviting disaster by keeping such huge amounts of  cash at home. hope they heard of an institution called the bank where they could have placed the money in suspense account to be drawn down as necessary.

Oh...I forgot that 578 in 100,000 = 0.578%
