Foreign Ministry puts all embassies on virus high alert

Foreign Minister, Don Pramudwinai

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has ordered embassies and consulates around the world to make sure Thais in their jurisdictions are well taken care of amid the Covid-19 virus threat.

Minister Don Pramudwinai said he had ordered them to provide care as needed as well as guidelines for staying healthy and reacting if they fall ill.

“All countries are carefully monitoring the situation, which currently is focused on the increasing number of infected people in South Korea,” he said.

“We have meanwhile directed the embassy in Japan to take care of the Thais who are trapped aboard the cruise ship Diamond Princess.”

Thailand has strict prevention and response measures in place, Don said, but the ministry cannot underestimate the danger because of the close proximity to China and Southeast Asian neighbours hit by the virus.

“We’re arranging a meeting of the Rapid Response Centre to monitor the situation in each country,” he said.

The ministry and Chinese authorities will take care of all Thais remaining in China, Don said.

Although they are still allowing Chinese tourists to enter Thailand.   How close is that?  Doesn't make sense.

Do they know something that we don't?

Yup people who have been following this closely for the last month realise things are going to get bad  , real bad I'm afraid. It is a nasty vicious new virus that has caused unprecedented havoc in China which is now breaking out in Korea , Japan and Iran. There will hopefully be some partial cures very soon and a vaccine as soon as it is humanly possible.

Dr Tedros said the number of coronavirus cases outside China was "relatively small" but the pattern of infection was worrying."We are concerned about the number of cases with no clear epidemiological link, such as travel history to or contact with a confirmed case," he said. The new deaths and infections in Iran were "very concerning", he said.

Thailand have strict procedures in place ... that put off westerners ... but come on in by the bus load if you're Chinese.

that is not their call

it is up to the country of residence how they deal with people infected or at risk

I'm wondering how the embassy or consulate would possibly know how to contact such Thais. I'm not aware of any Thai consulate that allows visiting Thais (including students) or Thai ex-pats to register their presence in the country. Or is a Thai national expected to contact their nearest Consulate abroad with the phrase "ฉันมี coronavirus"

very valid point bunny - they don't

But like I said - it's not up to them anyway

saw the Title,

and expected to read that LOS had swallowed their pride;

 - and announced that they had opened dialogue with all 'Foreign' Embassies to be wary for their peoples in Bangkok
