"Thais Help Thais” fights Covid-19 crisis, revives economy

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Tourism and Sports says that the COVID-19 outbreak has reduced the number of Chinese tourists by 90 percent and the number of foreign tourists has reduced by over 60 percent. He has called on Thai people to spend money as usual and shop and travel in Thailand.

ICONSIAM has worked with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to organize a campaign “ICONSIAM, Thais Help Thais”, which is aimed at allowing those in the tourism industry to set up booths for free of charge to offer services . The offers include air tickets for domestic flights at discounted prices starting at 999 baht. Also, leading hotels will offer discounted room rates and food and beverage coupons.

Moreover, all outlets inside the shopping mall will offer discounts up to 90 percent. The event will run from today until March 1 on M floor, ICONSIAM.

Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakan, Minister of Tourism and Sports, emphasized that the most important thing now is that Thai people have to help each other by shopping at malls and travel in the country as it will show confidence that the Thai public health system can still contain the situatio.

As for the economic stimulus measures, the government is currently considering the guidelines, especially for the Taste Shop Spend Campaign Phase 4, which will be launched soon as is considered necessary at this time because the government must do whatever it takes to generate the largest amount of cash flow in the country.

That would draw a large crowd (at least women shoppers). What about the risk of gettting infected by the virus?

I know a way well but it will not please the junta led by Khun Prayuth

It would please us all because the baht would suffer a severe tumble

I think shop owners at malls like Iconsiam aren’t the ones that need help the most, maybe? Also, I don’t see the relation between shopping at the mall and confidence in the Thai public health system.

Because it allows some muppet who would normally (and rightly) be ignored. to get his photo in the papers. Same as always, they'll do almost anything to get their 3 minutes in the sun, it's a part of the Thai psyche, it's what make the beggars so adorable.

They should be encouraged. Children like this need to be encouraged to feel that they're worthwhile.

In spite of all the evidence to the contrary.

  What's great though is:

  - Muppet 1:  Don't go to large gatherings, like political rallies.

  - Muppet 2:  Go to large gatherings, like shopping malls and public restaurants.  Oh and take the BTS to get there.

I've learned a new phrase.  "Criminally stupid."

Gee...would love to help out and go on a shopping spree in Bangkok but...

....immigration has my money frozen in my bank account for the better part of the year (sorry, my money is tied up)

....the government's forced me to set up a contingency fund in case they decide I need to buy an overpriced medical insurance policy in the future (sorry, I'm too uncertain about the future to spend money)

....my immigration office would require me to file a TM-30 report when I return home from my overnight shopping trip to Bangkok. (sorry, too much hassle to travel and stay overnight anywhere)

Besides, with climate change and drought, farmers in my village are barely hanging on by their fingernails. Would the minister not agree that they are more worthy recipients of help and support than upscale malls in Bangkok?

You mean this has been about the TM30 all along? Is this the Thai way of absolving themselves of this curse?

Business must be bad at ICONSIAM. All offering up to  to 90% discounts. Lies upon lies....

Pathetic really.

agree, have a view over a huge field that was fully prepared, plowed (not burned), the small water separators neatly lined up.
but the (apparently promised) water provided was barely enough for half a ngaan.
another bout of erosion of fertile soil going on right in front of me.

Wonder how full the Reservoirs upstream are ....

You’d probably need a work permit, a stack of other forms, and half your day at immigration if you were going to help out.

After the way tourists have been treated over the years, whatever happens is well deserved.

If anyone remembers the news from last year about 30% of the retirees here had to leave due to the immigration change. Not to mention how many western tourists have stopped coming, a downsized digital nomad community, people turned away at the airports because they’ve come here “too much.” A lot of those people would still be here spending money.

I would love nothing more than to see this place financially crippled. This is what you get when you <deleted> on people and treat them like ATM machines. Som num na.

You already are with the 800,000/400,000baht in your bank untouched for 6 months or 50% there of never ever being touched.

  And there you have it...

There must be millions to be made with this taste, shop, spend campaign. Insanity failed first time so do it again, failed a second time so do it again, failed a third time mmmm let's do it again" we so clever we skim so much money no one say anything, again please and keep going"... Shop spend 10 coming soon...

Thais travelling all over the place as tourists to compensate for the lack of foreigners is a sure thing to spread the virus to every corner of Thailand.

I would love to come shopping in Bangkok , I NEED to go shopping in Bangkok,

but the risk too great.  Two times 8 hours in a bus with closed aircon with sneezing

and coughing people , then the same with the city busses in Bangkok , touching

what hundreds before me have touched . Bus terminals full of people .
Then get the outbreak that is bound to happen and get quarantined in Bangkok.

Who's going to pay for staying in quarantine , who's going to pay the hospital bills

when I get the virus. Do I feel lucky , punk ?

I'm already weary of cars here with Bangkok or Chiang Mai plates.

The Thai  way.

If it fails,or does not work to plan, keep doing the exact same thing over and over again.

The  theory is that sooner or later, it WILL work out, because thats the way we have planned it to be.
