webfact
Suffering vendors make plea to MBK on rent By THE NATION Some 100 MBK Centre vendors in Bangkok’s Phayathai district gathered in front of the shopping complex on Monday (February 24) and later participated in a peaceful walk in and around the centre, demanding that operator MBK Public Co Ltd reduce or exempt them from paying rent as they are suffering from decreasing sales amid a lack of foreign tourists worried over the spreading coronavirus. A vendor who participated in the rally told a Nation TV reporter that rent for retail shops at MBK Centre is around Bt60,000-Bt90,000 per month. “We have seen a significantly lower number of customers since early February, causing some shops to make as little as Bt150 per day. If this keeps up we might not be able to afford the rent and will unavoidably have to close down,” he said. According to another vendor, the rally was brought about by the fact that April will be the month when vendors have to renew their annual contract with MBK, in which they are required to pay a large sum of money up front. The vendors said they would therefore like MBK to reduce or exempt them from paying rent in the coming months to allow them to come up with the money. Later the same day MBK Public Co Ltd issued a statement saying it is formulating short and long terms measures to help vendors and will announce them soon. The company added that it would treat vendors as family members and believe they can overcome this obstacle by working together. They don't really have a choice do they, i.e. if the vendors can't afford to pay their rents, the shops become vacant and the domino effect occurs, banks move in and everybody is out of pocket. Interesting times ahead, not only here, worldwide as travellers stop in their tracks and economies start to falter.
Popular Post tonray
Maybe if there weren't hundreds of vendors right next to each other, selling the exact same stuff...business might be better. The well capitalized should weather the storm and have a better business when things get better. Same for Chatuchak market....a huge market with the same goods available from way too many vendors competing with JJ Mall selling the same exact stuff. 3

Stargeezr
MBK is only the tip ofthe iceberg. It is a most boring mall to shop at, beause of the lack of imagination. As another poster stated, everybody sells the sam stuff, yawn! Would not surprise me to see some vacant stall in MBK and other malls soon. justin case
maybe 2020 is the time for thailand to understand what competition means ... all those shops ask the same price for the same product, NO INCENTIVE same as in other shopping malls (referring ex. phone repair shops, all the exact same price)

drguid
I just returned from my 4th trip to Thailand. It was the first time I didn't visit MBK. The place is so 2005. I stuck to souvenir shopping in Terminal 21. All the tourist tat is on the same compact floor, and the bathrooms and restaurants are much better too.
