A foreign female tourist was pulled from a drain after falling into it in Phuket's Kata area on 29 August, with footage of the incident prompting online criticism over pedestrian safety and local infrastructure.

The incident was recorded in Kata, Karon subdistrict, Muang district. A local Facebook user shared video showing the woman inside the drain as a foreign man, believed to be her boyfriend, tried to help her out.

He eventually managed to pull her clear.

The footage does not make clear exactly where in Kata the fall happened, what caused it, or whether the drain covered had collapsed as the woman stepped on it.

The Facebook post accompanying the video questioned the condition of the area and its infrastructure. It included a sarcastic remark about the experiences tourists seek and find, when travelling in Thailand.

Kata is one of Phuket's best-known visitor areas, particularly among overseas holidaymakers. The video has therefore renewed online scrutiny of the maintenance of public spaces in a province that remains one of Thailand's major tourist destinations.

Visitors who see an immediate hazard in a public area may wish to avoid it and alert nearby businesses, accommodation staff or local authorities where possible. In an emergency, Thailand's general medical emergency number is 1669.

Online reaction focuses on safety

The clip drew a large number of comments, with users criticising safety measures and the management of public areas. Comments included: "Is she badly hurt?", "Oh, this is Thailand," "Taxes are meant to be stolen for everything," and "Embarrassing."

The online reaction has again placed attention on tourist safety and infrastructure upkeep in Phuket.

Lots of drainage construction going on in many places on Phuket, including kata.

I always try to avoid stepping on drain covers and like — you never know if the will last — and I'm also careful with any electric wires hanging around on walkways.

Both the drain covers and the sidewalk paving around them can easily collapse. The strongest part of the covers seems to be the edges, which mostly stay intact. That's what I aim for when I'm walking down the sidewalk.
