LONDON (Reuters) - The first coronavirus death in Britain has been confirmed, medical authorities said on Thursday.

“The patient, who was being treated at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, was an older patient who had underlying health conditions,” England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said in a statement.

“We believe they contracted the virus in the UK and contact tracing is already underway,” he added.

The hospital, in Reading, west of London, also issued a statement.

“The patient has previously been in and out of hospital for non-coronavirus reasons, but on this occasion was admitted and last night tested positive for coronavirus,” it said.

The fact that this patient tested positive doesn't mean the Wuhan virus killed him. Will there be a post mortem examintion to confirm what actually did? Don't hold your breath.

Every death linked, however vaguely, to the virus is fuelling public alarm and enabling governments across the world to expand their powers to control ever more aspects of our everyday lives.

You are splitting hairs.

And trolling the URL to a conspiracy blog.

I’m sure whoever owns it is grateful for links from TVF.

Whether or not it's a conspiracy blog I don't know.

However, the woman in her 70's had underlying health problems, and had tested +ve for C19.

Did she die from, ie because of the virus, or was it a contributing factor, due to her age & other health issues?

We don't know.

But the headline of this news article, & others lead 'you' to believe it is.

Not to detract from the relative seriousness of C19, but there is, imo, way too much sensational reporting with this.

It sells copy though, doesn't it.

That, & your pal Greta.

I resent and repudiate your unwarrented accusation of trolling. And it certainly is not "splitting hairs" to question the validity of the methodology used to determine deaths from this or any other virus.

If you were an investigative journalist who has been covering epidemics since the AIDS crisis instead of just another jaundiced keyboard warrior you might understand this.

Tired old cliches like "conspiracy blogger" belong to the same egregious lexicon of made-up words and phrases - Islamophobe and transphobe are recent examples - routinely used to stifle dissenting voices on important issues.

Incidentally, Chomps, do you actually realise who invented the phrase "conspiracy theorist" - and why? And please don't say it's just another conspiracy theory! (I assume I don't even need to point out that numerous "conspiracy theories" have turned out to be true).

1. For the record, are you claiming to be or to have been an investigative journalist?

2. Do you understand what a blog is?

now 2 cases

Dunno why you should give me a 'confused' emoji for post #4, dear Chomps.

It's perfectly clear & feasable; because the C.O.D. hasn't been attributed directly to C19 - as I suspect, is likely in many cases.

@Chomper Higgot

I find your post confusing because it is founded on the same misunderstandings as those presented by Krataiboy above.

The patient was admitted and tested positive for the virus, which has known symptoms and a known cause of lung failure.

The patient sadly died, but was in hospital under care of doctors who with the exception of limited reasons will issue a death certificate and attribute cause of death.

There is no automatic post mortem, no reason to doubt that the medical team have correctly attributed the cause of death.

You really do not know what will be put as the COD.

I'm sure there will be a p.m. due to the circumstances, ie C19.

I would expect that it will be attributed as a contributing factor, but not the sole cause of death.

PM's are really not as simple as it seems you think they are.

I wanted to put a Smile emoji in this post, to keep it as an amicable discussion. They aren't accessible though.

Put it this way. If i was 70 odd years old with health issues and died from a stab wound it would be the stabbing that did me in, even though it could be a contributing factor because i was too frail to fight off the injury.

Yes, but the subject matter is the Corona virus and nothing to do with old people getting stabbed

It will be the cause of death. These people were not dead until they caught it.

Unless they were previously fit & healthy, then no, it won't be.

If they weren't, it will be a contributing factor.

But, as I said earlier, PM's aren't as straightforward in many cases.

For example, & simplified.

A person suddenly dies from an Aneurysm.

The patient had uncontrolled blood pressure which caused the bleed.

It would be reported as:

" patient died from an Aneurysm, brought on by excessive uncontrolled blood pressure"

It will be a combination of things as to why they died

No it will be the virus that caused the organ to shut down causing the death. Whether the organ was weak is not relevant.

Lots of old people die of pneumonia, more than the young who are strong to fight it. But pneumonia is still the cause of death.

Them being old is indeed relevant, because if they were not old, then they would not have died

Very interesting exchange. As we can all see, there's a certain group of people who only want one script on the coronavirus: hysteria, panic, with all of it in the US being blamed on Donald Trump. And of course, as you noted, it's also about government accumulating more power over our daily lives. This isn't unlike the *climate change* hysteria. But let's set that aside.

The media loves to sell panic and hysteria. I guess we'll all have to stay glued to our TV sets to get the latest news, right? And one expert says "as many as" _____________ (insert high number here) people may die from the coronavirus! Oh my gosh! We better tune in and be afraid, very afraid. It's much easier to give up our basic freedoms is we're scared.

OK, back to planet Earth. This virus shall be nothing more than a memory in a few months. Life will get back to normal and once again, the pants-pissers will look like fools.

I am fascinated by how some people are virtually cheering for a virus to have the highest body count possible.

But they're not , nobody I know and or respect would ever wish hellish misery on another human being to point score on an internet forum. And if they did I would have nothing but contempt for them. Since you claim this can you provide examples ?

Wouldn't it be contributary rather than the cause ?

Right here in this thread, with the hope to give coronavirus credit for killing people who die of other causes.

Great posts Alex.

Yup, we're all being whipped up into some kind of Zombie apocalyptic frenzy, & the Media love a good story. The more copy, the more money.

I saw a report in The Metro I think it was, the headline was something like:

"Uncontrolled Infection hits *a city*"

And guaranteed to strike fear into people's hearts.

Just think of the payday a Pharmaceutical company is going to have when they produce another vaccine.

However, there are, I'm sure many, many people who will just applaud these 'brave boffins' in a not too dissimilar fashion to CP's 8 Mbaht mask factory.

*Waits for the responses with anticipation*
