A former member of the Election Commission today (March 6) raised his opposition to a proposal by the finance minister under which Bt100 billion will be earmarked for hand-outs to 14.6 million low-income earners at the rate of Bt1,000-2,000 each a month.

“The money would be used for hoarding goods, not to stimulate the economy” Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said on his Facebook page today. “If I were the finance minister, I would rather spend Bt100 billion to tackle the new coronavirus for public safety".

He would also spend Bt120 million on masks for medical personnel and Bt200 million on their life insurance policies , Somchai said.

Moreover, Somchai said he would build twenty face mask factories with Bt2 billion, and Bt1.6 billion on deliveries of the masks to all households nationwide for two months.

“These will add up to a total of only Bt3.92 billion, compared to the Bt100-bn handout plan of the finance miniater , leaving a balance of Bt96.08 billion, " he said.

It does seem like vote  buying if giving 1-2k away.  Dont old people only get 800 baht/ month?   the thing is how do you decide who needs the money.
