Premier League, Football League and WSL suspended until April 4

 

 

(Reuters) - All elite soccer matches in England, including the Premier League, were suspended until April 4 on Friday due to the coronavirus pandemic, English soccer's governing bodies said.

 

"Following a meeting of shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on April 4," the Premier League said in a joint statement.

 

The English Football League (EFL), which oversees all professional tiers of English soccer below the top-flight, had announced the suspension of all football activity earlier in the day.

 

The Football Association said the professional game in England would be postponed until April 3 at the earliest.

 

England's upcoming friendly internationals against Italy and Denmark at Wembley on March 27 and 31, respectively, will not take place, the FA said in a statement http://www.thefa.com/news/2020/mar/13/fa-premier-league-efl-statement-football-suspended-130320.

 

The men's and women's FA Cup competitions have also been suspended.

 

The decision to suspend all football activity in the country had been jointly taken by the Premier League, the FA, the EFL and the Women's Super League (WSL), it added.

Following a meeting of Shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on 4 April, subject to medical advice and conditions at the time.

 

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: "Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19.

 

"In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority."

 

Despite the challenges, it is the Premier League's aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so.

 

In this fast-moving environment, further updates will be provided when appropriate.

All UEFA football matches for next week postponed due to coronavirus

(Reuters) - UEFA has postponed all Champions League and Europa League matches due to take place next week because of the coronavirus outbreak, European soccer's governing body said in a statement on Friday.

 

"In the light of developments due to the spread of COVID-19 in Europe and related decisions made by different governments, all UEFA club competitions matches scheduled next week are postponed," UEFA said.

 

The governing body added that the Champions League and Europa League quarter-final draws scheduled for March 20 had also been postponed as a result.

 

The decision comes ahead of a crisis meeting on Tuesday where UEFA will consider all options for the next period, including possibly postponing the Euro 2020 tournament scheduled for June and July.

 

English Premier League side Chelsea, who were scheduled to travel to Bayern Munich for a last-16 Champions League game on Wednesday, have announced that winger Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive and that their whole squad is in quarantine.

 

Tuesday's Champions League matches between Juventus and Olympique Lyonnais and Manchester City and Real Madrid have already been postponed as Juventus's and Real Madrid's players are in quarantine.

 

That day, UEFA will hold a video conference of all 55 football federations along with club, league and player representatives to discuss the situation, including various options to finish the season and deal with the issue of Euro 2020, which could be postponed.

 

Europe's top soccer leagues have already been placed on hold because of the outbreak, which has killed over 4,900 people globally.

 

The English Premier League, which has not yet been suspended, has called an emergency meeting later on Friday in the wake of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta testing positive, to discuss its response to the pandemic.

4th/5th place is the new trophy...get with the program. The FA Cup and League Cup are dead. It's all about League position these days. Spurs still in with a CL shout if we get some of our players back.

When I was young the FA cup was the big prize, way ahead of winning the 1st. Division. It was followed all over the world. EPL has taken over, but the FA cup still has some status. The league cup has always been a waste of time IMO. Hopefully this year all fixtures will be completed, however delayed they may be.

Coronavirus: English football extends suspension to April 30

 

English football will not return until April 30 "at the earliest", it has been decided at an emergency meeting between Premier League clubs, but the 2019/20 season will be extended indefinitely.

 

Officials from all 20 English top-flight clubs spoke over a conference call on Thursday morning to co-ordinate a strategy for completing the fixture list in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic which has led to the suspension of almost all sport.

Apparently no 'End Date' to the season was discussed at today's meeting between EPL Chiefs, EFL, PFA etc.

 

"Today's shareholders' meeting provided an opportunity to discuss possible scheduling models. It remains our objective to complete the 2019/20 season but at this stage all dates are tentative while the impact of COVID-19 develops."

• UEFA "strongly recommend" finishing the season's domestic League & Cup games
• The Premier League remain determined to complete the 19/20 season but no specifics given as yet
• Serie A in Italy vote unanimously to complete the 19/20 season subject to Government approval
• All Eredivisie (Netherlands) matches postponed until September 1st,  possibly voiding their season?

French Government have banned football until August. Looks like curtains for Ligue 1 this season. No decision as yet regarding promotion/relegation etc.
