A leading figure in Thailand's fight against drugs has said that both foreigners and Thais could face execution if convicted of importing the Class 1 restricted drug Ecstasy.

Daily News reported that 11 Thais and foreigners were arrested between March 10-11th after packages were intercepted by the Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF).

They had been posted from Germany.

Arrests were made in the central, north and southern regions of Thailand and three packs containing 4,835 pills were seized.

This follows six months of Ecstasy being posted from many European countries resulting in 20 arrests - five foreigners and 15 Thais.

More than 105,000 pills have been seized in that time.

Importers face serious penalties said Niyom Termsrisuk a secretary of the drugs suppression authorities. This includes the death penalty as the drug is a Class 1 prohibited narcotic.

Distributors can face life imprisonment and 5 million baht in fines.

Users face punishment too and Niyom warned about the drug's effect on the nervous system and heart, including the possibility of death.

Such claims have been the subject of much debate for years, notes Thaivisa.

  • Shouldn't be a class 1 narcotic at all, actual harm index studies have put MDMA as a substance to be far less harmful than legal substances, such as alcohol.   But as much as I am pro choice

But as much as I am pro choice with regards to usage, I feel that drugs are absolutely a mug's game in this region at large.

The fact that execution has even been mentioned show how stupid the policy / policymakers are.

I wouldn't touch the stuff with a barge pole in this day and age. Hope people take these warnings very seriously as it would be sad to see someone on death row for dishing out a few tablets.

It's that useless word again - 'could'.

I don't know if this is directly from the government's use of this word or not. Even so it's still a pretty vague word to use. Isn't it time it was made compulsory. After a few deaths the message might start to get through.

I think there's still some South-east Asian countries that have a compulsory death penalty for drug smuggling.

It's not only drugs. Quite often we see 'could' used regarding traffic regulations and other offences. It's the discretionary use of laws that let offenders get away too easily.

Yet again: 'can', not 'will'.

they should be worrying about stopping fentanyl and carfentanyl more than a few E's

Thailand will never execute a foreigner. Bad for their image, as I'm sure they dont want to be like Indonesia. Sure you can scare and threaten all foreigners of the death penalty when it comes to drugs but when was the last time a foreigner was executed in Thailand..... Never

Hmm, odd that a Buddhist country would even entertain the idea of executing people. Killing of anything is wrong, and executions have undesirable after effects that any monk who knows his stuff would be able to confirm.

They have and they do, and you know not all foreigners are white westerners?

Whilst here, does anyone know anyone/company  that can ship some hospital meds from Uk to here ?

Shouldn't they add -

NB: If you're convicted as an international class A drug smuggler in another country then that doesn't count and won't be used against you at all in Thailand no matter what position you hold.

Nah, he'd manage to send a message from beyond the grave to say he was still alive.

Thai government: Ecstasy importation could mean death sentence

Thai government: Heroin importation = governmental ministerial position

Seems its not so much what you are importing but where that matters.....

Translation -

Foreigners importing drugs could face execution,

but if sufficient qty of brown envelopes is provided to us, then mai pen rai.

Oh and don't bring up Thai people involved in the drug trade,

because no Thai's are involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking - it's those pesky immigrants from Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia

Exactly. Attention grabber. '80% of the population could catch Covid19.'

It was 0.05% in China.

it was comparatively low due to the Chinese governments actions, many other countries citizens wouldn't of put up with the societal shutdown then though it looks like they'll have to now..

Execution, what BS dreamer said that. Been none since Thaksin departed.

Some years ago a young English guy got caught importing E's they said 3500 not sure if that was possible in a shampoo bottle but anyway I think he got 50 years did about 8 here in Thailand then shipped back to UK

Which govt Orton Rd?

Thai? Not on your nellie!

Death panalty doesn't stop any illigal activities.  But there are so many crimes done in Thailand with no penalty at all, especially if it's done from rich people who can pay out themselves.  So death penalty for drug smugglers or sellers is crazy and won't happen!

Ecstacy is kid stuff compared with yaba...

  • Popular Post

wow! ecstasy that kills around 30-50 people a year in the UK, out of around 1million users. A drug that is now being used in areas of the world in therapy and counselling. This doesn't warrant a death sentence! The most likely outcome you will have from taking ecstasy is wanting to hug everybody

More dangerous riding a bicycle apparently.
