EU drugs watchdog says currently no evidence ibuprofen worsens COVID-19

(Reuters) - The European Union’s healthcare regulator said on Wednesday there currently is no evidence which links anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen with the worsening of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it was monitoring the situation, adding that patients and healthcare professionals should consider all treatment options including paracetamol and anti-inflammatory drugs to treat fever or pain in patients with COVID-19. (bit.ly/2U0zLwC)

The watchdog is already looking to aid the development of a coronavirus vaccine and prevent supply bottlenecks and drug shortages due to the outbreak that has infected nearly 200,000 people across the globe. (reut.rs/2QtB3hE) (reut.rs/33wuQqy)

The EMA’s announcement follows a similar tone on Monday from Nurofen producer Reckitt Benckiser (RB.L) to check reports that said the pills’ active ingredient ibuprofen would hurt patients.

“In line with EU national treatment guidelines, patients and healthcare professionals can continue using NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) as per the approved product information,” EMA said.

Based on the current advice, drugs such as ibuprofen must be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest period possible.

The EMA also said it was ready to support any studies looking into how these medicines affect patients with COVID-19.

The regulator’s safety committee in May began looking into the effects of the drugs following a survey which suggested that infection due to chickenpox and some bacterial infections could be made worse by the medicines.

That's strange......

I just read the total opposite, that it should be avoided at all cost.

Only use Paracetamol.

Someone is spreading "Fake News"

Yep. I read an account written by a UK victim and he was taking ibuprofen as it was more effective than paracetamol!

He thankfully recovered as he was an at risk individual with other health issues.

Too much fake news and fake information being splashed around.

Very strange....strawberries don't worsen COVOID -19. Get a fever , take paracetomol. Why is ibuprofen even mentioned. Totally different drug.

Maybe because many of those affected were taking ibuprofen?

WHO Now Officially Recommends to Avoid Taking Ibuprofen For COVID-19 Symptoms

The World Health Organization recommended Tuesday that people suffering COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.

The warning by French Health Minister Olivier Veran followed a recent study in The Lancet medical journal that hypothesised that an enzyme boosted by anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen could facilitate and worsen COVID-19 infections.

Asked about the study, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva the UN health agency's experts were "looking into this to give further guidance."

Wiki: NSAIDs

The most prominent NSAIDs are aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, all available over the counter (OTC) in most countries.[7]Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is generally not considered an NSAID because it has only minor anti-inflammatory activity. It treats pain mainly by blocking COX-2 and inhibiting endocannabinoid reuptake** almost exclusively within the brain, but not much in the rest of the body.[8][9]

**does than mean it enhances cannabinoids?

Big Pharma told its slave EU to shut up !!!

Ibuprofen is a cheap generic drug widely sold by different manufacturers. Not a lot of incentive to go to bat for it.
