BANGKOK(NNT) - The Prime Minister has stated that he understands the ordeal that people are going through during these difficult times and stressed that the government will take care of its citizens during the COVID-19 crisis.

Government Spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said the Prime Minister expressed concern over the well-being of all Thais, as the administration issued an order shutting down various public gathering places, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

These places include educational institutes, boxing stadia, sports clubs, horse race tracks, entertainment venues, theaters and cinemas.

Spokesperson Narumon stressed that the temporary closures are necessary to ensure social distancing and avert transmission of the new coronavirus, which has infected a large number of people in such establishments.

According to the Spokesperson, General Prayut asked all people to limit unnecessary travel, visit a doctor if they exhibit flu-like symptoms and strictly observe the Ministry of Public Health’s COVID-19 preventive guidelines.

The Premier vowed to look after citizens during these challenging times, especially those who are being affected financially by the pandemic.

They'll cross that bridge when they get to it. Thinking too much gives them a headache.

They need to go further and recommend folk stay indoors full stop .. Its out and spreading faster day by day .. European countries like Italy and Spain ordered citizens off the streets but by the time they took that measure it was already established in communities with the infection and death rate soaring ..

That will happen in Thailand unless they are willing to shut down cities like Bangkok and order everyone off the streets as the British have all but done with London today ..

Pass the vomit bag. The only people that will be taken care of are the Govt. Ministers, Generals, HiSo Thais and all their cronies... Everybody else will have to care for themselves.. What happened to all the face masks and hand gels, cannot be found in any pharmacies in Chiang Mai. Everything has to be ordered through Lazada at inflated prices. So much for the price monitoring by the Govt. usual BS lip service to the press, TV.

Oh dear! He is assuring the citizens of the country that he will look after them and take care of them. But???? The government can not even have control over their own people. face mask hoarding for export on one side, drug business on the other side, watch collectors at the same table and promoting of people that encroaches on forest land. Do we really need to go on? Put a diaper on each of them and throw them in a daycare center.

Neo-prohibition.  Pubs, massage shops, and anyplace else where the citizens may fun.  But restaurants are Ok. Want to go to an all you can eat buffet with a couple of hundred people. No problem.  Want to have a beer with a few of the regulars - Danger, danger, danger.  Think about it.  If you're gonna close one, close them all and for the same reasons.  Leave essential stores open such as grocery stores and pharmacies, and of course, essential services like immigration - need to keep track of the foreigners!
If it's a pandemic, treat it like a pandemic and contain the damage.  The sooner it's contained, the sooner the world gets back to normal.  And if they are serious, they should be treating everyone who is infected for free for the public good, including foreigners and foreigner labor both legal and illegal (take a sheet from South Korea's playbook and grant amnesties for all over-stay immediately).  The cost of treating every one infected is the price of fighting contagion, which will ultimately rip with wheels off the economic buggy if left unchecked.

...and government workers who have the extra-special health care benefits not extended to average Thais.

Like Italy and elsewhere, when the public healthcare is overwhelmed, the elderly and dirt poor will be shuffled off to the corners to die along with illegal migrant workers and uninsured foreigners.  And that block of the 'uncared for' will shuffle off and infect others. Wash, rinse, repeat.
HiSos?  Top of the line care, and access to the limited supply of anti-virals and palliative meds that the hoi polloi will be unable to access.

Unless your a VIP.  We have a contingent of VIPs and their cavalcades and entourages scheduled to roll through our village in a few days.
I sincerely hope the out-of-towners stay in their cars. On the one hand the government is saying, "Stay put and don't travel" but then they don't walk their own talk as they head out into the boondocks from Bangkok to 'press-the-flesh' with the locals.  It would be a good time to lead by example and stay home, imho.

If the Govt. really wants to restrict the gathering of large amounts of people why are the shopping malls still open and 7-11's? Will never happen as Central and CP families don't want to see their profits plummet.

More BS nothing changes TIT

A better idea:  apologise to Thai citizens for keeping flights and land border crossings from Communist China, while Wuhan virus spread so quickly in January and February.

we, farang expats, we are not citizens, right, are we even human in this country?

What he forgot to say he will look after Thai citizens after he looks after all his mates  Army Generals etc

2 months too late... but hey I'm sure Chinese New Year was a blast for all concerned!

Now you can reap the non-benefit!

One probable reason why the shopping malls still open and 7-11's are still open, is that people still have to eat, and if you close them where will people buy food from.

Shocking press release from this charlatan. Par for the course from the NNT.

He doesn't state in anyway how they plan to help / take care of the ordinary citizens who will be hugely affected by this and he also gives massively incorrect advice out such as, visit a doctor if they exhibit flu-like symptoms.

Apart from closing certain places they have done nothing to stop this and the numbers are going up day by day.

OMG! I feel soooo safe now that this government has told me not to be concerned.

... if only 50% of what you invest in the fight against Covid-19 you invest in the fight against pollution and road deaths, you would save many more lives ...
