The governor of Nonthaburi has ordered all schools, theatres, massage parlours, gymnasiums, swimming pools, amulet markets, gaming centres, internet cafes, karaoke shops and indoor playgrounds closed for the rest of the month.

Suchin Chaichumsak said on Wednesday (March 18) that the province’s communicable diseases committee, which he chairs, had on Tuesday agreed on the temporary closures as a bid to stem the spread of Covid-19.

The Cabinet reached a similar resolution on Tuesday.

“Covid-19 is a dangerous contagious disease and the number of cases is increasing quickly,” Suchin said.

Nonthaburi, abutting Bangkok, is densely populated and at high risk of contagion, he noted, so it’s necessary to limit public gatherings.

“Under Article 35 of the Communicable Disease Act, we are ordering universities, schools, tutoring schools, theatres, massage parlours, gymnasiums, swimming pools, amulet markets, gaming centres, internet cafes, karaoke shops and indoor playgrounds closed from March 18 to 31,” he said.

“Also, we ordered boxing, sport, and cock fighting stadiums to temporarily close until the situation is resolved.”

Venue operators violating the order could be jailed for up to a year or fined up to Bt100,000.
