Large number of Thai returnees from Indonesia carry Covid-19

Forty-two of 76 Thais who returned from Indonesia on Monday (April 6) are Covid-19 patients, a report on Tuesday said.

 

Of the returnees, 22 were sent to quarantine at Southern Lak Muang Stadium in Songkhla province, including 11 suspected cases, 10 patients, and one who tested negative.

 

Seven returnees were sent for screening and quarantine to Seangtham Vittaya School in Narathiwat province. Five are suspected cases and two others are confirmed as infected.

 

In Pattani province, 13 people have been quarantined at places provided by the province. Eight are suspected cases and seven people are infected.

Amongst those who were sent to quarantine in Yala’s primary health centre, seven were infected with the virus.

 

The other 26 returnees have been quarantined at Songkhla Rajabhat University Satun campus, of whom16 were found with the virus.

 

Also, 35 LionAir staff have been quarantined in a hotel in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district. They had no suspected symptoms.

 

Thailand’s total number of Covid-19 patients on Wednesday (April 8 ) rose to 2,258, with 111 new cases confirmed over a 24-hour period while three foreigners died, Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Wednesday (April 8 ).

If 50% of those returnees have the virus just imagine how many more have who are still back in Indonesia, these are very serious numbers of infected people coming into this country, but at least these were handled correctly as it should have been with all others before them...

I respect everyone's right to their religious beliefs BUT can we stop religious gatherings at this time.

What about all those people that walked over the border the over week from malayasia? I didnt read that they were put into qaurantine.

I cant imagine they were all covid free.

There are supposedly a few hundred Thai "casino" workers stranded in Poipet (a virus hotspot) wanting to return. If the borders are shut, let them remain shut. Why let them and all the previous people from Indonesia back home, knowing many have the virus, which just makes the numbers  far worse.

I think its because they are citizens of Thailand..a country can't just then their back on you...should the same apply to UK or US citizens wanting to return and being told no...stay there and die..

They are only catching about 5% of infections world wide according to some,even the guy who wrote the original predictions Neil Ferguson has always maintained the virus is so easily transmitted that only 1 in 19 cases get detected.

1500 Thais coming pver the boarder from Malaysia all virus free? Not sure about that

40 odd doctors have already died in indonesia, they dont have the equipment to protect them selves, so i highley doubt they have the means of being able to detect the virus or save peoples lives.

Many people were sick and still   Permitted to enter the airport from Indonesia? It does not make sense.

This is where my concerns about inaccurate case numbers being reported gets serious.

 

A country of 250 million+ people, comparatively low <3,000 confirmed cases and yet 42/76 of these returning Thais have tested positive....!

 

A reasonable conclusion is that certain countries don’t have the infrastructure to test and monitor effectively, so if we are trying to take some comfort from relatively low reported infection numbers, this might be misplaced....

A very sensible observation.

That's why the numbers went up again yesterday.

so they determined these confirmed cases by actually testing them, funny how testing is limited in Thailand for the general population yet they want to eagerly test those arriving from other countries, the narrative being - other countries much worse than Thailand even though we've only tested 30,000 people in Thailand over 90 days

 Poipet is a virus hotspot? Where does that information come from?

 

Any Thais that are left there will be in the casino zone and without permission to enter Cambodia. So if they can't cross the border into Thailand they are extremely vulnerable to any kind of medical emergency whether virus related or not.

I'd like to see 100 people pulled off the street in Thailand tested to see how many have it... or had it. I'm still confused about Thailand's numbers. The government may just be harassing these people coming from neighboring countries. Thailand may well be infected as badly but most people have no symptoms. Who knows maybe there is something in the environment that lowers the death toll. Thailand seems to be an anomaly.

Indeed.  My friends wifes father died of cancer last week in Indonesia and the hospital wouldnt touch him as they are completely overwhelmed with Covid patients.  As of today Indonesia is registering only 3000 cases.  Wouldnt be suprised if the real number was upwards of one million or more.

24 is still a serious loss and represents 10% of all deaths from Covid-19 in Indonesia...

Indonesia is heading for major catastrophe. The health system for 280 million people [4th largest in the world] is unable to cope, and the government administration - slowmoving, incompetent & corrupt (sound familiar?) - is unable to organise testing, shutdown or social distancing. Probably physically impossible in any case - Jakarta makes Bangkok look like a civilized & well-ordered modern city ...

 

So, Thailand writ large.

 

Major security worry for Oz. As Oz CV numbers flatten out & start to run down, government in Canberra is beginning to look at assistance to the Indons.

Imbeciles should be recognized formally at an annual nation-wide awards event and be presented with a statuette, like at the Oscars. Broadcast the event live on television to face/name-shame the winners and runners-up.

Poipet is hardly a "virus hotspot".  Cambodia has far less incidence than Thailand and there is more reason for them to fear people crossing in than for Thailand to fear them crossing back.

 

That said, casinos can get crowded and anyone who worked in one should be tested.

Very good point. For way too many people their religion provides some false sense of solace and comfort, but it can turn out to be a true wolf in sheep's clothing.

 

Some historians argue that one of the principal reasons why the plague ("Black Death") swiped through Europe at such an astonishing rate in the middle ages was because people frequently gathered in churches, praying to "God" to save them. It had exactly the opposite effect, of course, as worshipers - unknowingly - infected one another, carrying the disease back home to their families. And what they also didn't consider was that it was "God" himself who created and unleashed that disease...  if you believe that such a supernatural entity exists at all.

 

Now fast forward a few centuries and realize that nothing much has changed. People still tend to flock to their church, temple, mosque or whatever, hoping to find some redemption there, endangering themselves and their families in the process.

 

Even the Pope, the alleged "Representative of God on Earth" (what arrogance!) held a prayer to ask "God" for relief from Covid-19. Although he really should know better where that virus came from in the first place!    

Utterly bizarre that religious gatherings with people travelling from different countries to attend were actually still allowed to take place in the midst of a global pandemic.

Had their temperatures taken and off home.... give it another week or so and the numbers will climb again.
