Monday’s announcement that the Australian Embassy is in the final stages of negotiating a special flight to Australia scheduled to depart from Phnom Penh on the evening of Sunday, April 12, has revived hope for hundreds of stranded Australian citizens in Cambodia.

According to the embassy, the flight will transit in a neighbouring country before continuing on to Sydney and arriving on the morning of Monday, April 13. During the transit, passengers will be required to remain onboard the aircraft for approximately two hours, per the requirements of the undisclosed carrier and country of transit.

Peter Gillard, organiser of the Facebook page “Aussies attempting to leave Cambodia” told Khmer Times, “This is considered our most solid plan yet. The majority of our group has now moved away from the previous plan to book a privately organised charter flight and chosen to register with this embassy flight.” “However, this is not a free flight and many Australian’s are still severely out of pocket after being recommended to book commercial flights which have been consistently cancelled at the last minute. They will now have to pay a further $680 for an economy class flight home,” he said.
