I have an American passport and am currently in Singapore. I was in Thailand last year for 5 months working as a teacher and model. Of course I was able to do this by making a simple visa run every month. I am wishing to go back and spend about the same amount of time working again, but am very confused as to what my best option would be as far as getting a visa for more than 3 months (would like one for at least 6) that does not require a company to send any letters or have involvement in the visa application process. I called the Thai Embassy here in Singapore and they were quite useless.

More useful information would include cost, amount of time to get visa, and if there are application forms to fill out online at all.

Thank you and I appreciate any help yall can give me,

All Consulates/Embassy issue only Single Entry Tourist Visas.

You should have no problem to apply for one Tourist Visa , valid for 60days , in S'pore.

Do a 30day extension and you got at least 90days covered.

After which you can do 3 Visa runs or go to Penang and get another Tourist Visa.

Note. You cannot work.

silly question here. do people who want to teach english have to know how to speak thai.

i mean how do you communicate what you are trying to teach if you dont speak your student's language.

Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate it.

Just to get this straight, with the extension I have 3 months. Then I can still do 3 visa runs? Or I can go to Penang to get an entirely new tourist visa? I was under the impression that after being in Thailand for 3 months on the normal tourist visa, I had to be gone for 3 months. I was also unaware that you are alout to make visa runs after an extension of a visa or after a visa expires for that matter. Maybe I'm confused.

Personally I would go to Penang or elsewhere and get another Tourist Visa. This is allowed as you are getting proper Visas.

Don't forget to check in with the Ministry of Labour so that you are getting a proper work permit to go along with your proper visa (which, btw in your case, is not a tourist visa).

Isnt it funny how people will rail against illegal immigrants until it suits them to be one.

Isn't it funny how people will stereotype and assume one's political views with no basis.

And no, you don't have to know any Thai to teach English in Thailand.

you are confused. lol.

just because you are doing visa runs, it doesnt mean you are gettin visas.

At the risk of sounding stupid and or confused again, why would you be doing a visa run if you are not getting visas?

If you have a one year multi entry non immigrant visa you can only remain in Thailand 90 days at a time. So you make a "visa run" by exiting Thailand/entering another country and then returning to obtain a new 90 day permitted to stay stamp.

Or you don't have a visa but only a 30 day permitted to stay entry without visa stamp. You make a "visa run" to exit Thailand/enter another country and return to obtain a new 30 day visa exempt permitted to stay stamp.

Or it could be to go to a Royal Thai Consulate in another country to obtain a visa for Thailand and return.

what we need are more real life examples to help us understand the rules. the rules are ez to understand if you come 2 or 3 times a year, just get a real visa. but if you come every other month like i do its confusing and the more you read the more confusing it gets.

has anyone gone to another countrys thai embassy and been told "no visa for you"?
