I'd be interested in knowing what it is like on the other side of the coin, as it where!

What do you find are the major difficulties facing farang women. Do you get treated by Thai's the same way as they treat their women (not allowed to touch the hair etc)? What frustrates you most?

  • Author

great that the first replier is a man!!!

as for my own experience and what I've heard from friends it is not a problem to touch a boyfriends/husbands hair. especially after your relationship has become more firm. might be different in some very strict educated circles, but what I've learnt is that in between the couple and in privacy you behave the same as in other cultures as long as no one gets hurt of course. any other sights welcome!!

the expectations what a thai man has of his wife differ anyway from which social background and family/education he comes from. the main thing is to make your own points and values, wishes clear, so you can understand each other - and accept or not. that means communicate!! which is sometimes the problem, could be the language or just different kind of thinking - or stubbornness. so we have to be very patient which is not the worst, being  in a buddhist country and also anywhere in the world.

I feel very well treated by thai men here - not always the case with farang men...  - and feel safe walking alone even at night, more than in other countries, of course you have to be careful everywhere. the way you behave -  it will come back to you.

one of the 'frustrating' things would be that you have many friends but you rarely know if they are real friends, that will take a very long time to find out. sometimes you get suspicious and think : what do they want from me?? but mainly they are just curious and find it funny to get to know farangs.

in a relationship the suspicion is less funny, especially if your pal does not have a lot of money...so you always beware and - that can be frustrating!

another difference is the family thing, it takes a much more important level than in our societies where children rarely have to take care of their parents, brotheres/sisters to that extent.

a thing I find frustrating is that it is very hard to make good friends also amongst the farang population, mostly you just have the one thing in common: being a foreigner in Thailand. as well a lot of strange people out there...

that is one of the reasons I wanted a farang girl forum!

It does seem to me that Thai's definition of friends is slightly different to farangs'. I think we would call them more aquaintances....but that could just be the way that the Thai's translate that type of relationship.

I think this is probably just a different spin on a similar attitude. In the western world the parents are duty bound to take care of thier children. In Thailand it's just the other way round. In societies (not just Thai but, lets say, south Africa) it is the same since the more children you have the more secure you will be in later life. It makes sense to have lots of children in the absence of state benefit to look after you.

I must admit that I try and avoid farang at all costs when in Thailand. I can talk to a British (Yes, I'm a Brit) idiot any day of the week (and usually have to). I don't need to travel a few thousand miles to do so. Don't lose sight of the fact that it can be difficult to make "GOOD" friends in the western world too and you do not have the added ice breaker of both being foreigners. I tend to thrive on the differences rather than the commonalities. If you both like doing the same things, when do you get a chance to do something different?

Elfe Wrote:

Point taken. I'll limit myself to the other areas.

  • Author

it wasn't meant ironic, I was happy to see that the first replier was a man. so don't limit yourself and I hope to read more of your points here in the future!

as I am not a native English speaker things might come out wrongly - sorry for that!

sure if you are just coming to Thailand once in a while you might like to avoid  your country fellas but if you are staying here for  very long time you would enjoy to have contact with someone from your own background

And then he goes on for about 4 pages in a female forum talking to other Westerners.

Keep it up elfe, you're doing a good job. :o

Elfe, I thought that was you sweetie, but the dogs & cosmetic on Samui bit clinched it for me! How are you & how are your tribe of canine kids? I hope you are all doing well.

I agree with you about the meeting friends bit & finding if they are genuine, sometimes with the language barriers & everything cultural, our ideas about a good freind & theirs can sometimes become a bit blurry, also having farang girl freinds can be the only life saver when you are living here full time as, although I have a few very close, female thai freinds, speaking to someone who watched the same tv shows as you growing up or having a crush on the same pop star when you were 13 is the only thing that keeps you going in moments of feeling isolated & different. Or craving after jaffa cakes or marmite, the list goes on......

Boo, I'm very fine, and so are my doggies, now have kitten addition to the family, rather unwanted, they rumble around in my roof, cannot get them out there but am quite worried about it as I'm sure they will be dead the moment they are mature enough to step out of there - killers are waiting already(i. e. my beloved sweet doggiebabies...).Cat mama must have had a bad day to choose that place. Any help suggestions for that??

am not sure about you though... anyway, great to meet you here!

Elfe, I have sent you a pm!

About the cats, not really sure what to do as I am not really a cat person, but maybe just leave them there untl they are older then tie up the dogs & coax the mum & kitties down with the promise of some chicken or something, maybe get b/f up there with a step ladder. ha ha. Should be easy to relocate them, especcially if you scare them away from your place with  couple of the better behaved dogs (ie ones that wont rip them to peices on sight!)

Am having problems with my dogs at the moment, one of my females gave birth 4 weeks ago & started with 8 puppies, not a bad figure considering she is so small, 2 died the day after birth & the other 6 were doing fine, then a few days ago, they all started to get sick & have all been diagnosed as having dystemper, 2 have now died & I can't understand why the vet will not put down a sick dog as the poor things went through anorexia (unbeleivable but true) frothing at the mouth, body fits as there nervous system broke down & then finally suffication. I know buddhists dont beleive in taking life but this to me is just so inhumane. I'm rooting for the other 4 & they are the strongest of the litter, so fingers crossed & I am also keeping a close eye on my other 3 adults, in case they start to show symptoms, but if anyone knows of any other tips on keeping the poor things alive I would be grateful to hear.

Hi elfe.  I think this is great a forum for women.  Keep up the good work.  I know i am a guy, so hey girls help your sister here and start your gossip.  As for me I just tip my hat to you, and your litters.  My girl in Thailand also has a kitty kat, and wait till i get me my partner a Dashund  spelled wrong, and I get to call him Tiger!  Should be a dog-cat fight soon enough.  Anyway I do hope you succeed.  Take care :blues:
  • Author

hi Dave,

thanks for your support! don't worry about the doggie-kitty relationship, it will be fine as they will be still very young when they get together, yet you should watch them for the first days. nothing cuter than dog and cat sleeping together and playing..

Boo, am sorry for your puppies, but I guess that's life. having dystemper at that very early stage there is hardly anything which you can do. and you did the most already by showing them to the vet and following his instructions, so all you need now is good luck!!! I think you should have the mother fixed after she has recovered from the babies. having prophylactic treatment for your adult dogs would be wise.

it is true, unfortunately the vets here refuse to put a sick dog to sleep even though there is no hope at all anymore. the only times when I heard about the vet doing that is when the dog was a danger for people.

I hope that would apply to more people here and not so many dogs would get poisoned out of neighbours disputes or hate...-so much about buddhism :o

my kittens are still in the roof, making noise as someone would hammer on something, I have no idea what's going on there... thanks for your kind advice, b/f went already up there but he claims there is no way to reach them.

hopefully they will get out of there alive.

the ticks are such plague this year, you could spend an hour every day to get your dogs rid of them. heard about a brand new medicine, a powder mixed in the food, which would free your dogs from these ugly suckers. will get more information about that today and keep you posted.

Hi elfe,

Sorry but a reply from another guy. Refering back to your opening post I am desperate to learn how to get rid of ticks. I have 2 x 2.5 year old rotties boys and the poor sods have got a permanent itch. I have tried all sorts of sprays, powders and spot cures but the buggers just keep coming back.

Thanks if you can help Rocky and Sampson

Hi Only thing I've found that keep the ticks away is front line but even after a thorough spraying , at this time of year, the buggers keep getting on them but I have noticed that they dont burrow & tend to die on the dogs after a while.
  • Author

hi chav,

seems like this year the tics are epidemic, a real plague!

there are some powders on the market which should rid your dogs from them, you have to put the powder in the food. I refrain from these chemicals because they are a real hammer, not good for your dogs also.

the flea&tic shampoos are good but if you use them too often the dogs will get skin reactions.

what seems to be quite effective is putting garlic in the dogfood. don't worry, you won't smell anything, but the tics will...

try to brush your dogs at least once a day on a light coloured floor and you will see the ones which haven't fund a resting place yet falling off.

good luck with fighting these ugly suckers!!

:o

elfe

Thanks Boo / elfe,

I would think that the garlic trick works because it alters the breath odour, apparently Ticks are attracted to the carbon dioxide in breath (also vibrations). Anyhow I will give it a go. The level of odour is probably outside our sensing range so it does not effect us.

I have tried a lot of different powders, shampoos, sprays and spot products; nothing has been 100% successful. I don't like the sound of edible powders.

At the same time as posting my question to you a researched a few websites, they basically said that to control them properly you had to control the surrounding environment, that meant cutting grass, keeping leaves and eliminating hiding places - followed by chemical attack !

I will let you know how they get on.

Ummm  regarding the problem of ticks (am I too late to join in?), I don't know if you have heard of something called 'frontline'?  It's a small tube of medicine that you give to your dog/cat by applying a small drop to the back of his/her neck.  I don't know if that's also a harmful chemical but I know that lots of people use it and it works wonder.  The vets also recommend it, so it shouldn't really be that bad.

But if you want to go completely organic then I've seen my grandma (Thai grandma) powder her dog with 'kah-min' powder (you know, that yellow powder, sometimes used in cooking... not curry powder though, just a type of herb).  I don't think that works very well personally as I still find odd ticks here and there but she swears by it.  So, might worth a try.

My vet also said certain vaccination has a desire side effect of decreasing ticks/fleas on your pet.  I don't remember which one now... something to do with protection against parasite in the hearts that your dogs can get from being bitten by mossies....  your vet will probably know if asked...

By the way, I have posted quite a few messages on this section already but don't really know if I have just assumed my welcome.  Are Thai women welcomed to post here as well?   ??? Hope so as I have already done that!  heheheh  :o I don't mind if you want to keep it farang women only though.  If you let me know I won't interfere.

Are Thai women welcomed to post here as well?

Not all of the posters are women, so I'm sure it doesn't matter that some aren't farangs either...  :o

Ok. cool :D  That's good to hear!   ::o:
everyone is welcome here - the more the merrier!  :o

Hi D80, As Nat says, all are welcome, if you have something to say or add to a post then feel free.

I put a post about frontline earlier but I just don't know whats wrong with it now, last year all my dogs were fine after a liberal dose of frontline spray (as I have 3 big dogs it's cheaper to buy the spray rather than the drops) but this year they are still being infested by these horrible things. Think I will try a frontline collar for each of them too & see how I get on. Everyday I take off at least 10 from each dog but the next day there are just more & more. Hopefully when I move away from the beach later on this year they will desist a little as I'm sure they are picking most of them up from other dogs on the beach.

  • Author

hi D80! of course you are very welcome to post your comments here, thanks for joining us. it is very enriching to hear statements from a thai woman's view, hope to read a lot more of you in the future.

and Boo: the ticks usually live on the ground or grass or on plants, waiting for a dog to walk by and drop on it. my dogs have no contact to dogs from outside the garden and still they have ticks. applied frontline drops on my two puppies the other day so hopefully it shows some effect.

wow! I really like that pink  :o

Hey Elfe, you look pretty in pink!  heheheh

Boo, I know what you mean about big dogs.  I've got 2 big dogs in Thailand as well (Great Dane!) so the spray thing is definitely better for me.

Just talking about ticks makes me itch!   :o
