The Royal Forest Department (RFD) is making preparations to recover the recently burned down forested areas in Thailand’s North, the department’s director-general Attaphon Charoenchansa said.

Attaphon added that he has instructed RFD officials to check the damaged areas and prohibited locals from invading the forest for agricultural benefits. Officials have also been tasked with estimating the damages and classifying the forest.

The department will also call on the general public to help with the recovery operation such as planting new trees.

“We have created 622 village networks across the country to deal with forest fires. Each village has been given Bt50,000 to fund their forest-saving operations,” he said.

Apart from these village-level networks, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has created 180 networks to recover the damaged forested land.

RFD and DNP have prepared 50 million and 16 million seedlings respectively to plant in forests in the North.

Maybe they can get the Bangkok tree/trimmers/hackers to help with the reforestation...

They'll just be burned down again next year.  They should focus their efforts on identifying arsonists and seriously sanctioning them.  Perhaps they need Rodrigo Duterte to assist them in developing a program to end the yearly arson.

Well said.  If the government actually acted seek out and punish those found responsible with fines, jail sentences and confiscation of assets, it would help.  However they seem to be unwilling, allegedly because high ups are benefiting from said burnings.  Tragic and unmovable corruption.

I agree I seen a fire started the first of burning season and a local reported it . There was no one even bothered to respond. This is the kind of protection we have here.

As soon as the plants are big enough to burn, they will burn them-waste of time and money-prosecute.

Allegedly huh. And just what is this "alleged" benefit? The ones benefiting are the poor people destroying forests to steal land and make a buck planting vegetables and everyone else including the high ups are choking on their disgusting pollution, not to mention the loss of precious forest land people seem to ignore. I don't know why there is always this impulse to blame everything on the rich as a scapegoat when the poor are doing horrific harm to the environment in many ways all by themselves. No one is asking the poor to steal land, burn it down, or burn their fields.

You dont think the government is capable of stopping them if they really want?  This is a government capable of enforcing a massive lockdown for months as well as a ban on alcohol sales.  There are many articles circulating the Thai media drawing lines between large corporations, profit making, political gain and the constant burning however we will never see a proper enquiry - will we.

In a freely elected government you may expect transparency however this clearly isnt the case.
