BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s foreign ministry on Monday denied claims that Beijing is spreading disinformation about the coronavirus following a European Union report that said there was “significant evidence” of covert Chinese operations on social media.

“China is opposed to the creation and spreading of disinformation by anyone or any organisation. China is a victim of disinformation, not an initiator,” said foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang at a regular press briefing on Monday.

The report by the EU’s foreign policy arm said state-backed governments including China and Russia were responsible for spreading disinfomration on the virus.

Reuters earlier reported that senior Chinese officials pressured the EU to drop the criticisms from the report last week, stating that it would make Beijing “very angry”.

The report was published late last week after a delay and some information regarding China was changed. An EU spokeswoman declined to comment.

China has fiercely defended its handling of the novel coronavirus amid calls from some countries to initiate an independent investigation into the virus and its source.

The foreign ministry’s Geng said there was no conclusive evidence that the virus originated in China, and warned that “political manoeuvring” behind calls for an independent investigation would not be successful.

Yes, good on China for standing up to the Western bullies. It’s about time. There are billions upon billions of people in the world rooting for China to be the world’s biggest superpower.

Depends by whose standards you consider good or bad. Half the world thinks they are the good guys.

The whole civilised world is angry with China, lies, lies and more lies as expected from communist's.

Its time to make a stand, the world has suffered, time to make them suffer, for decades they have stolen Western technology, hence their rise to industrial power, thanks to its cheap labour.

If foreign governments are slow to take action, its up to us, the ordinary people to drastically cut what we buy thats Chinese.

And  Wuhan was the victim of an American corona virus originating in the US, said the same source.

Those who encourage truth and freedom of thought, good.

No one knows this better than 1 billion Chinese citizens, and of course Hong Kong and Taiwan.

I care about Beijing getting “very angry” as much as I care about a mass murderer getting angry when caught. ( And thanking them for halting the spreading of virus is like thanking a mass murderer for having stopped his/her killing spree. ) It's about time world citizens stood up and denounced the CPC as mass murderers.

OMG! Not "Very Angry". That sh*T may work in China where everyone is intimidated, but the rest of the world will continue to tell them to "pack-it!".

They will probably deny copying western brand name goods too....:coffee1:

Why would the the world say that there is significant evidence that the China Flu/Wuhan Virus /Covit 19 Started at A Wet Market in Wuhan Originated/Spread by Batts.

c'mon, he was just being...........sarcastic.

The Chinese government have jumped on the bandwagon of all those corrupt politicians around the world. When caught with their corruption, scams and lies they all whine "it's all politically motivated". This is hoping that people who like their pretend politics will forgive them their criminal dalliances.

This expression is often heard, more and more, nowadays.

If someone did in the past doesnt give right to someone do same in the future, if everybody follows that pattern than?

Let the lawsuits begin.  Perhaps China should threaten the EU as they just did with Australia.

Hong Kong is a PR nightmare for them. Free-ish press, English language and western leanings with riots. Good. No mercy.

Never heard of the Roman Empire?

And, the Dutch, Portugese, Spanish, French, and Belgians all had their moments in time.
