Bhakdi, son of Thai parents in the diplomatic service, studied human medicine at the University of Bonn, and he became Dr. med. doctorate. He had a scholarship from the Max Planck Society at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg.  After he worked at the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen. He was appointed as professor for medical microbiology to the University of Mainz.

From 1991 he taught there as a professor at the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene. Bhakdi was a member of the Collaborative Research Centers of the German Research Foundation “Proteins as Tools in Biology” at the University of Gießen, deputy spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center “Immunopathogenesis” and spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 490 “Infection and Persistence in Infections” in Mainz.

A reasonable and methodical person swimming in a sea of unknowns. He wants to view it as an ordinary corona virus and not a disease associated with SARS, MERS, and killer Yunnan bats. He is also speaking of Germany and its healthcare system, which likely experienced a milder strain. He agrees there is little clear data, I think more clarity is needed about this virus, and what it can become, before we let her rip. I agree though it's urgent, the world is a far more fragile place that it was long ago.
