State Railway of Thailand suspends service to Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT: -- All 14 scheduled passenger trains serving this southern border province of Thailand have been suspended temporarily following an armed attack on a passenger train on Saturday.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has halted services temporarily, meaning that all passenger trains heading for Sungai Kolok district on the Malaysian border will stop at Yala railway station.

Passengers wishing to continue their journey will have to either board another train at Yala or travel by bus.

Two persons including a train technician and a young girl were wounded in their legs during Saturday's attack. The technician was released from the hospital after treatment while the girl was still under the doctors' care.

Security measures at railway stations in Narathiwat province have been tightened following Saturday's train ambush, according to Pol. Col. Bunlue Chuwaet, district police chief of Narathiwat's Ruso district.

Police and army units are now on search operations looking for militants who had escaped from the scene, he said.

Meanwhile, seven suspects earlier apprehended in connection with other insurgent attacks in Narathiwat were being detained at an army camp in nearby Pattani province for interrogation.

Initially, Pol. Col. Bunlue said, one of the seven suspects had been involved in several previous attacks in Ruso district.

The three restive provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala have come under attack by insurgents on an almost daily basis after militants raided an army camp here more than three years ago.
