I have a non o visa and wp through my school.

Is it possible to move schools at this time and therefore get a new visa?

My understanding has always been when you change employers and your current visa is voided you leave Thailand, come back on a 30 day tourist visa and start the new employers visa process.

Obviously at the moment that is not possible and even when international travel opens again, you will need covid certificates, (government?)  14 day quarantine and who knows what else.

Is it possible or even realistic to think about changing employers and visas at this time / for the foreseeable?

With assistance from both employers it is possible to change jobs and keep your extension of stay based upon teaching valid.

You new employer must first apply for a new work permit for you to obtain a work permit application approval letter.

Then you current employer must give you a termination letter stating you last day of work. On that day you would then apply for a new extension when the current one is canceled and the new one would apply for a new extension with the approval letter and other supporting documents. Then your current work permit would be canceled and the new one issued.

Thanks for the reply.

I am a bit confused wether you are talking about just the WP or the visa and WP.

Just so I am clear:

1. The new employer applies for a new work permit by obtaining a work permit application approval letter.

2. My current employer must give me a termination letter stating my last day of work.

3. When the termination letter is handed to immigration the new employer applies for a new extension of stay, with the WP approval letter and other documents.

4. My old employer's WP is then cancelled and a new one issued for my new employer.

5.  Then my new visa is ratified.

Am I reading this correctly?

You will get a extension of stay based upon teaching at immigration not a visa.

5. You extension will be done when you go to immigration. After that your new work permit will be issued at the Department of Employment.

ubonjoe, I think there is some confusion here. He said he is on a non-o, so if he is on a non-O or extension of a non-o he won't need to do anything with the visa, just the work permit.  correct?

Non O visa extension will not he cancelled, when the work permit is returned. This is only the case with non B. Thats why, if you are married to a Thai and have a Non O family visa, you should never convert it to Non B, no matter what the employer says. It is within your rights to work on a Non O family visa or extension.

Non-b "extensions" die with your job, but not 90-day entries from a Non-B Visa.

Also, be aware, that if using Thai-job income for a Non-O based on Thai family extension, you will need a 2nd set of all the original docs you needed to get the work-permit (not copies).  They will not make it easy - they don't like it.  BOI simply refuses to do it (n/a for a teacher).  But, I agree that a non-o extension based on Thai family is the best arrangement for those who qualify, as it avoids your permitted-stay ending the same day as your job ends.
