Thailand to expand coronavirus testing as new cases dwindle

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand plans to expand coronavirus testing for critical groups as the number of new cases is dwindling into single digits and some business are reopening, a senior official said on Thursday.

The government aims to reach a total of 400,000 tests from the current level of around 230,000, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government's Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration.

"This is about 6,000 tests for every million individual ... and considered a moderate amount globally," Taweesin said.

Thailand has a population of about 66.5 million and has recorded 2,992 infections since January, with a total of 55 deaths.

The criteria for testing will be expanded to include flu-like symptoms without a fever or the loss of the sense of smell, which will account for 85,000 new tests, he said.

There will also be additional testing for high-risk professions such as medical personnel, screening authorities, migrant workers, public transportation drivers and delivery workers - but not widespread random testing in the population.

"The theory of casting a wide net will not work, but this approach is effective," Taweesin said.

The number of new cases in Thailand has been declining since April and authorities have said they will consider a second phase for easing of restrictions such as re-opening of businesses next week after allowing smaller businesses to open earlier this month.

In Thailand the number currently is 3,264 per 1 million of population .

It works better then whatever they do/did in the UK.

Aha, now at last we have the figure for the number of tests carried out to date.

230,000 in 107 days since 21st January!  Low number of tests = low number of positives = low number of cases.  Maybe???????

As I understood it, under the current state of emergency, gatherings of more than five people are not allowed! Unless they are using mirrors, there appears to be more than 5 people gathered in the picture above. ????

Don't let it worry you too much.

They should really start to test the teenage population as the US and the UK are starting to see many cases of Kawasaki Disease which the UK has been finding in children with Covid19.  This was a very rare disease, but it is now starting to expand among children to young adults.  Its scary to think of the implications that Covid has for all age groups. It is not just the flu as many folks here on TV and as some doctors have been outlining.......

It will account for 85k new PUI. It's a completely different matter if you can ever process their samples.

And it's not just the matter of tests, it's also how quickly you get the diagnosis: https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-how-to-do-testing-and-contact-tracing-bde85b64072e

We’re seeing three factors that matter here:
1. How many infected we identify and isolate
2. How many contacts we trace and quarantine
3. How quickly we do both

Currently failing on all three, so lockdowns must continue.

Are these test really realiable?

The first sentence says "... should not be the sole basis of a patient management decision." Yet the authorities use these Covid19 numbers to justify every decision they make. Should we really be trusting these numbers? It seems to me these Covid-19 tests in many ways are not able to accurately, reliably or conclusively test for SARS Covid-19. What do you think?

If you want to understand what this test is... see the linked video below of Dr. Cowan explain the test starting at the 23:00 minute mark.

"Negative results do not preclude infection with SARS CoV-2 virus and should not be the sole basis of a patient management decision. In some patients repeat testing at various time points or from various collection sites may be necessary for detection. False-negative results may arise from improper sample collection, degradation of viral RNA during shipping or storage, the presence of RT-PCR inhibitors, and/or mutation in the SARS CoV-2 virus. The impact of vaccines, antiviral therapeutics, antibiotics, and chemotherapeutic or immunosuppressant drugs on assay performance has not been evaluated. Please see CDC website for updated testing algorithms and other information. "

I could see the figures (tests/million population) in worldometer site for a longtime.

This is a stretch. "Many cases" is a stretch. A direct link with COVID-19 is a stretch.

According to the article linked below:

Quote

"Doctors aren’t totally sure what causes it, Jones says, but many believe it’s triggered by a viral illness."

[ Dr. Veena Goel Jones, a pediatric hospitalist with Palo Alto Medical Foundation in California, who is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the Stanford School of Medicine. ]

One would assume that "viral illness" includes all of the Coronas, Influenzas, et.al.

And when referring to COVID-19 being "just the flu", what most people are referring to is it's mortality rate, not the actual virus or it's illness, as it is clearly not the same as the flu.

What testing will be performed? Because what really needs to be happening right now is some antibody testing to give us an idea of how many people have already been infected and recovered and are presumably immune.

It should have been the opposite of that... but then again I'm no expert in the land of experts!

Hey, we gotta keep this "pandemic" alive ????

I hope they wont be importing the same test as they got in Tanzania.

Quite possibly.

Thread about this video here:

Covid-19 found in goats, birds and fruit according to test kits. Questions should be asked.

https://forum.thaivisa.com/topic/1163320-covid-19-found-in-goats-birds-and-fruit-according-to-test-kits-questions-should-be-asked/

Increasing testing while the cases dwindle....  Thailand should be careful with that! For if they increase tests too much, the undescovered cases will become found and the amount of cases  will ... grow.

Let me guess. Some Chinese kits they gave as sign of "friendship" to their debt slaves.
