What's happening with TESCO ?

Nikkei Asian Review commented on how Central was also bidding and should've been the winner. Central's area is mostly high end retail, and this would've moved them into the conventional area also. CP already controls this area with all of Thailand's 7-11s. Allowing them to grab even more was ridiculous. Even better would've been to give a totally new player a chance.

Not surprising, considering how this is the same country in which not only did the big guy "win", but also had his competition disbanded.

so  every 'new Tesco'  and  every 7/11 will be selling exactly the same old <deleted>.  Wonderful.  Nothing like little to no variety and cheap quality food to make nice profits.  Thailand doesn't know what it is missing by having its terrible food retail offers. May be okay in parts of  Bangkok, at a price, maybe in a few outlets in other big Cites, but generally, Nationally,  it is truly awful.

I gave Tesco a miss long ago apart from a visit every 3 months .

Big C better for me . Tesco's decent beef has been non existent for years now

The prices at Big-C are more competitive so too.

In other words, added value for less money.

Exactly as quoted above: Tesco has sold its Asian business (including Thailand) to a company which is effectively owned by various units of the CP Group, including CP All (ie 7-11).  The deal was signed and agreed in principle but not yet completed, likely to fully complete later this year.
FWIW, my opinion, a better deal for the seller ( Tesco) than for the buyer (CP).
There has been some transition agreement re the brands and supplies etc  but, in effect, no more Tesco in Thailand after 2020.

Why no more Tesco in Thailand after 2020? CP didn't buy it to close it down. You can't buy a lot of the stuff they sell in other stores.

Many products at Tesco you can't find at Big C. On top of that, the Online shopping at Tesco Lotus is 10 times better compared to Big C, which is a joke. Big C doesn't have a clue. They should take a look how it works at Tesco Lotus.

Makro is also from CP and still has the ARO homebrand.

I don't believe CP bought Tesco to stop the Tesco brands, because you can't buy those at any CP owned store in Thailand.

I have never found one thing in Tesco that I cannot get in Big C, usually cheaper or a better brand, not a one.

Everything normal, except they don't seem to be replacing tesco own brand stock once sold.

Not good news for those who like a nice cup of tea at a decent price.

Any alternative suggestions anyone?

Stock up, I got about 6-8 boxes of their red label tea which is not bad. 115bht for 80, was reduced to 80bht, and their last box of earl grey, told once gone no more.

It's because they've been bought by CP.

No more 'home brand' anything.

Of course there will be, unfortunately CP will take over as the home brand.

CP regularly hold food fairs here in Chonburi and other than the ready cooked chicken it is all very cheap and nasty.

Is there a Monopolies Commission in Thailand investigating this sale ?

Not been mentioned but it is being looked at in Malaysia, doesn't appear to be a done deal as yet, but more than likely.

Been on the cards since the Tesco scandal in 2014, other countries have already been abandoned, these are the last 2 outside Europe.

"This transaction is conditional upon the approval of the Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, the sale of Tesco BV’s shares in Tesco Malaysia and the sale of Tesco’s Thai business to CP.

“The proposed disposal is expected to complete in 2H 2020, ” it said."

I'm hoping CP may continue to import some Tesco branded products, especially its finest range, after the deal goes through, just like Big C did with Carrefour goods when it took over, though it then changed to importing Casino products instead, but they're pretty good too.

I am fairly certain this will happen, but maybe the product selection won't be as diverse as before.

Who said new players were not allowed to bid? For Tesco, the highest bid is all that counts

Exactly, it was a business transaction, not a game with the runners-up being given a helping hand.

as i read it , from what has been announced, there will be an interim, transition period, after the deal closes, during which Tesco will continue to supply product to the new owners, should they wish.  The Tesco brand is not mentioned explicitly, but i am sure that will not be used going forward other than for a very short period.

My opinion only, but CP have paid a huge price (10 plus billion USD incl debt) for this ,especially now we live in a rather different world , post covid. The value really was in the property and the income from the sub-tenants in the malls; i am not sure if that still stacks up now.

As mentioned above, prior to Tesco taking greater control, several years ago,  CP were the original partners in Tesco Lotus, so maybe there is some emotion (not strictly economics) behind the transaction; also CP recently raised the finance, on the  debt markets  to fund the transaction  , so it does look like it will go ahead.

However i really have my doubts that this will go ahead on the original terms. If it does, it is a phenomenally good deal for Tesco. To put this into some perspective,  Tesco have sold this business for more than the combined total  values of Sainsbury and Marks and Spencer in the UK.

They will use the proceeds to sort out their pension deficit (in the UK) and also pay a significant special dividend to Tesco's own shareholders. A smart move by Tesco!

Honestly Tesco was better than BigC 7 years and more ago, but went downhill when they converted retail space into more sub- contracted clothes and jewelry stalls. I only go there for buy one get one free offers - they do more of them than BigC do.

I will miss my Tesco finest Earl Grey teabags, but i have swapped to Thai loose leaf tea from Makro - a bit strong but only about 95 baht for half a kilo.
