I thought I'd post this as it's a recent change and people may not be aware.

They now say On demand dosing is for anal sex or straight men having vaginal sex.

Previously all literature said for male to vaginal sex a daily dose or holiday PrEP was required, this was also confirmed to me by the Red Cross and the Terence Higgins Trust, apparently this was due to lack of data.

Anyway good news for those who don't want to take a daily dose and instead take it when required 2-1-1

You can get from Thai Red Cross, it works out about 400 baht for 30 tablets, i get 4x30 when i go. The Indian generic TENOF EM is slightly cheaper than the Thai generic TENO EM, i switched to the Indian one. A very slick operation in there

Thanks much, scubascuba3.

I am near VM and there's a row of pharmacies across from the Rajathevi hospital. I'll check there for the Indian generic. If the price is comparable to the Red Cross that saves me a trip.

Pharmacies don't sell it

Question: At TRC do they want a script etc. or can one just walk in and buy the PrEP and go? Reason to ask is I called the Pulse Clinic and they want kidney/liver function bunch of tests done first.

You can't just buy and go you have to go through their tests. Today i was there, because I hadn't been for 4+ months i was treated like a new patient again and had to have the full range of tests and more annoyingly i could only get 1 months worth, next time 4 months.

It take 2-4 hours, best to get it done before their pharmacy has lunch 12-1pm, otherwise it's a wasted hour sitting about

Sucks. Wish we could get it hassle free or online.

The tests are important though, specifically the HIV and Creatinine. You don't want to be taking PrEP if you have HIV already or Creatinine level isn't in the range

Liver function also.

Yes. The HIV and Creatinine tests seem to be the every visit tests, yesterday they also included ALT, Hep C and Syphilis, they would have also done Hep B but I've had vaccinations for A&B already

Does anyone know if they offer this on demand version at Thai Red Cross?

Yep, it's the same pill, you just take it at different times. I switched back to daily dosing due to slight nausea everytime I took 2 which was every week

I was just reading about HIV in heterosexual men. If we rule out men who have sex with men and don't admit it, men are catching HIV from women, in Norway and western Australia it's predominantly caused by men catching it in South East Asia (Thailand specifically mentioned).

I'm surprised more people don't take PrEP

Thanks for the reply, I will go there soon to get on it and I like the idea of not taking it daily so I guess I will try the on demand out first out.

Your nausea must have been very bad I take it with the on demand, wonder why it was so strong compared to your daily dose.

Also, is it the same exact pills as the daily and you just double up initially?

You just have 2 pills to start with, see examples below. The nausea wasn't bad just having it weekly for a day wasn't ideal plus I went back to having sex more often, I switched to 4 pills a week (reduced dosing method) but in Thailand for heterosexual sex the Red Cross say a man should take daily, although i-base says no need

Interesting, I actually like the idea of your method as well and had no idea it was an option. So, too start to get it into your system, how did that work. So, say you wanted to start today, when could you safely be with someone?

I'm slightly rusty on it but I think it assumes you've been taking PrEP for a while so you have some in your system already. I'm not sure you can kick off straight with 2 pills if you haven't taken before, but I could be wrong on that so double check, use the i-base link above. One of the reason I say that is if you start daily you are meant to have it for 1 week before sex
