MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's coronavirus cases overtook Italian and British infections on Monday to become the third highest in the world after a record daily rise hours before President Vladimir Putin was due to review the country's lockdown regime.

The official tally surged to 221,344, meaning Russia now has more registered cases than Italy or Britain and only trails Spain and the United States, as the number of new cases of the novel coronavirus jumped by 11,656 in the past 24 hours.

More than half of all cases and deaths are in Moscow, the epicentre of Russia's outbreak. On Monday, it reported an overnight increase of 6,169 new cases, bringing its official total to 115,909.

The country's coronavirus response centre also reported 94 new deaths, taking the overall death toll to 2,009 people. The official death toll remains far lower than in many countries, something Kremlin critics have queried.

Russian officials attribute the rising and large number of cases to a massive testing programme which they say has seen over 5.6 million tests conducted.

Putin is due to hold a meeting later on Monday, a public holiday in Russia, to decide whether to modify the country's lockdown regime which entered into force at the end of March.

Common enemy and it isn't COVID

  • Popular Post

i wonder where their cases originated from, Pattaya perhaps

from russia with love.

Putin should blame Trump for not being transparent on the extent of early spread of Covid in the US that could have help spread the virus to Russians visiting the US.

Its in the Vodka!

It's strange. Wasn't Russia the first country in Europe to ban Chinese tourists?

So what happened?

Putin and his people are afraid that some new Iliych Ulianov shoot them into space

so they began to use covid very much.

Only we don't, and never will, know the actual situation in Russia. Vlad ain't the most truthful leader about.

Or do you believe him?

Putin is a lying thug. So many bare faced lies when he's instructed a hit on foreign soil. A rogue country nowadays.

Such high daily numbers, but Russia is lifting restrictions!

Russians and Chinese mingled in Thailand in their zillions.....????

one should count not only cases, but only the proportion, percentage, of deaths of those cases (which are way less than in the US, generally EU and UK), how many of those require hospitalization (less, too) and how many tests have been condacted thus allowing to identify those cases in the first place (2nd place by the amount of test in the world, after the US).

more identified cases, hence, are better, or least not worse, that less, but not identified or undereported ones, like in Thailand, Indonesia, China.

What great news for thailand plus other great news coming from wuhan 6 news cases

A quick look of the Moscow train map looks a lot like NYC. Just my two cents.

What is the count in India now. Looks like the Chinese and Russians are off the scorecard.

Sigh of relief from No 10 as corrupt failed state steals the UKs ‘failed government’ crown.

Just be sure it’s an American or a Russian driving the train you are joy riding on.

A pile of stupid and insensitive comments , rooting for more deaths in Russia. It is not only how many people are infected, what matters is the number of deaths. Both in Russia and East Europe it is significantly lower than in West Europe or US. The entire populations of these regions have been continually vaccinated against tuberculosis, it is BCG vaccine ,the name comes from the initials of  two French researchers :Calmett  and Guerin who discovered the vaccine. The first letter in the vaccine name is B - relating to bacillus . The vaccine has proved to be efficient in giving boost to immunity. . Flue is something different, it is a virus, constantly mutating, very difficult to produce a safe vaccine. Anyway, how anybody can be happy to see people dying , doesn't matter what country it is. So many farangs posting here suffer from superiority complex, but   they often complain how Thai people do not like them. Of course , they will not like them. You show them your contempt. and you will get the same

...which made no difference as far as Covid-19 was concerned.

True, but it does make a tube ride in Moscow much nicer than in NY.
