The Planning Ministry has asked all provincial authorities to collect numbers and identify poor families so that the government doles them support amid coronavirus pandemic. Minister Chhay Thorn said on Monday during training session for Kep officials to identify the impoverished in their villages that the poor will receive aid.

Mr Thorn said that officials should verify that the villagers are poor and deserve donations. He said that some villagers complained about not being listed as the poor and became jealous when their neighbors were given aid.

“If we are successful in identifying the real poor, villagers will praise and appreciate local and provincial authorities for their good work,” Mr Thorn said. He said that numbers of destitute villagers in rural areas will be completely collected by the end of this month and urban areas by the end of June.

I read recently where half a million garment workers could be let go in Cambodia. The impending worldwide depression that will ensure from this covid disaster is really going to hit Cambodia hard. I suspect the government will need to file out a lot more money in the next couple years. Potentially more than what they're willing to give.
