Isolated heavy rains are forecast for parts of the South as the tropical depression over the lower Bay of Bengal intensifies into tropical cyclone “Amphan”.

It is expected to move northwestwards towards the upper Bay of Bengal.

The Thailand Meteorological Department forecast rains west of the South in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun provinces.

Wind waves in the Andaman Sea will strengthen from May 17-20. Waves in the Andaman Sea are expected to be about two metres high from Krabi upwards and above two metres high in thundershower areas. All ships have been advised to proceed with caution and keep off thundershowers. Small boats should keep ashore. The advisory is in effect on Sunday (May 17) at 5am. The next weather bulletin will be issued at 5pm.

Meanwhile, hot to very hot conditions continue in upper Thailand as a heat low covers the area. The southerly and southeasterly winds blow in with the humidity to the Northeast, the East, Central and the lower North. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are possible. People have been urged to beware of the severe conditions.

The southeasterly winds across the Gulf lead to continuous rainfall over the South. Tropical cyclone Amphan covers the Bay of Bengal. This is moving northwest to its upper portion. Tropical Depression “Vongfong” over Philippines is moving northwest, but will have no effect on Thailand, the department said.

The dust situation is expected to improve due to rains.

Hot weather with isolated thundershowers are forecast for greater Bangkok. Minimum temperature will be 27-29 degrees Celsius and maximum temperature 36-39°C. Southerly winds blow at 10-25kph.
