Attempts to smuggle billions of dollars into Cambodia thwarted

Featured Replies

The authorities have successfully thwarted at least two attempts to smuggle billions of dollars into Cambodia. These were in addition to the millions seized from suitcases and bags smuggles through the airport and land borders, said Prime Minister Hun Sen. Speaking at the cabinet meeting Friday, the prime minister said that the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia rejected the attempts to smuggle up to $2.5 billion in illicit funds, supposedly for investment projects.

“Cambodia is not connected with any financial transactions involving terrorism. But for money laundering, for examples there were couple of cases of confiscation and seizures of money involving laundering which came through Phnom Penh international airport. “Some money launderers had also tried to sneak through Cambodia’s land border and they carried with them large amounts of money in suit cases and bags. These are monies that did not go through regular banking transactions and such classified as laundering,” he said.

They have been exercising terror on their own. Why do they need connection with others?

You'd think they'd be happy to get the foreign currency.

I was warned long ago to be very cautious about US Currency circulating in Cambodia. Seems that is a favorite place for North Korea to dump their counterfeit dollars, which are some of the best copies out there. I'm sure the casinos are just fronts for the money laundering.

And 2.5 billion is cash is an enormous size of bills, like railcar big.

Neither of these press reports, also those in Cambodia News, refer to "exercising terrorism" by present day Cambodia - so why quote them for reference??

This is TVR's very 'dodgy comment attribution' system doing its mischief again. It was not me who said anything about terrorism. I was actually challenging @Retarded to justify his statement. Something he has so far, failed to do. (see posts #2 & 4)

That, my friends, is a helluva big suitcase! If my math is correct, a million US dollars is 780³ cubic inches or just 0.45 cubic feet. A billion in greenbacks would be 1,000 times that, or 450 cubic feet. about the size of a 5 x 12-foot storage unit. They never would have caught this in a shipping container. Bummer--no govt deserves it!
