U.S. coronavirus deaths top 100,000 as country reopens

(Reuters) - The novel coronavirus has killed more than 100,000 people in the United States, according to a Reuters tally on Wednesday, even as the slowdown in deaths encouraged businesses to reopen and Americans to emerge from more than two months of lockdowns.

About 1,400 Americans have died on average each day in May, down from a peak of 2,000 in April, according to the tally of state and county data on COVID-19 deaths. (Reuters interactive: https://tmsnrt.rs/2w7hX9T)

In about three months, more Americans have died from COVID-19 than during the Korean War, Vietnam War and the U.S. conflict in Iraq from 2003-2011 combined.

The new respiratory disease has also killed more people than the AIDS epidemic did from 1981 through 1989, and it is far deadlier than the seasonal flu has been in decades. The last time the flu killed as many people in the United States was in the 1957-1958 season, when 116,000 died.

Total U.S. coronavirus cases are over 1.7 million with some southern states seeing new cases rising in the past week, according to a Reuters analysis of data from The COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer-run effort to track the outbreak.

(Open https://tmsnrt.rs/2w7hX9T in an external browser for a Reuters interactive)

Globally, coronavirus cases have topped 5.6 million with over 350,000 deaths since the outbreak began in China late last year and then arrived in Europe and the United States. South America is now bearing the brunt of the outbreak, with Brazil having the second-highest number of cases in the world.

Of the top 20 most severely affected countries, the United States ranks eighth based on deaths per capita, according to a Reuters tally. The United States has three fatalities per 10,000 people. Belgium is first with eight deaths per 10,000, followed by Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy, according to the Reuters analysis.

Reuters and CDC not quite in agreement.

Sure.  Unfortunately it is a lot about politics and money.

If our world were attacked by aliens the same would apply.

Will never change in fact just gets worse I am afraid.

100,000+ dead Americans... That certainly qualifies as Making America Great Again!!!

The overall infection and death rates have been declining somewhat in the U.S. lately, but it's really a tale of two countries...  The rates have been going down in urban places like NY and NJ that were worst hit in the early going... But right now, the rates are going up in the midwest and south, places that weren't so much affected early on. And those are the places that tended to relax their stay home/social distancing rules the quickest heeding Trump's advice.

Johns Hopkins had a recap of the Reuters analysis:

Quote

The analysis found that 20 states reported increased weekly incidence (for May 18-24) over the previous week, compared to 13 states identified last week. Notably, Alabama (28% increase), Missouri (27%), and North Carolina (26%) reported the highest weekly increases. After several weeks of declining incidence, Georgia reported a 21% increase as well.

Quote

The US CDC and White House recommend that states exhibit declining incidence for at least 14 days before initiating or furthering efforts to relax social distancing measures. According to the Reuters analysis, 17 states have not met that criteria at any point since the onset of the US epidemic,

The NCHS data are always lagging behind... Anyone who follows epidemiology knows that...

If anything, the current death numbers around 100K being reported by the CDC, Johns Hopkins, Reuters and elsewhere are considered an undercount of the true level of deaths caused by CV because of lack of tests being done, deaths at home, other factors.

Pretty much the last time anyone heard from the CDC's Dr. Nancy Messonnier in any high-profile way re the CV pandemic:

Quote

President Trump nearly fired a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) official after she said in February that the agency was preparing for a pandemic, according to The Wall Street Journal.

“It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses,” Nancy Messonnier, the director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said on Feb. 25.

According to the Journal, Trump was angry with Messonnier after her statement resulted in a dip in the stock market. The same day, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the virus was “contained” in the U.S.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/494187-trump-threatened-to-fire-cdcs-chief-of-respiratory-diseases-in

She, and pretty much the rest of the CDC, were made a non-entity, persona non grata in shaping the U.S.'s CV response by the Trump Admin. after that...

But in the end, it's pretty clear who was right and who was wrong. Messonnier right, Trump, Azar and Co. wrong!  It's equally clear who deserves to be fired here, and it's NOT Messonnier!

Its the only war where the president tells everyone to disregard the generals.

15 cases and will soon be zero and it will just go away like magic.

Now where are my golf clubs.

Truth tellers get punished and/or fired. Head coroner's office in Florida has ordered medical examiners (the ones who have the actual numbers) to keep silent because THEIR numbers are higher than the ones the coroner is reporting.

Since the President and the federal government at large have been largely MIA on the CV pandemic since the beginning, and especially this week, it falls to others to mourn the 100,000+ dead Americans.

The Washington Post did a good job in their front page story and package today:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/100000-deaths-american-coronavirus/

But there have been few expressions of public grief — no gold stars in the windows of homes where people died, no outcry for national unity or memorials, as happened after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In this trauma, the enemy is unseen; there is no one against whom to mobilize the nation’s energy, anger and frustration.

“We’re living in a moment when national sentimentality and displays of compassion are muted because the government doesn’t conceive itself as a first responder,” said Lauren Berlant, a University of Chicago professor whose work focuses on compassion. “There is empathy, but it’s been localized — it’s in the states and cities and neighborhoods.”

The 100k deaths probably low, as there has been a rise of 65k deaths beyond numbers last year after covid numbers taken out.

That is going to upset a few people here who keep insisting otherwise.

The number does seem very low, especially when you consider that in America, in any 5 month period in years gone by, the average number of deaths would be around one and a quarter million. Obviously dying has gone out of fashion, in a world that now expects everyone to live forever.

Yeah those damn boaters, never-mind all the outdoor activities going on in every other state full of mask-less people up to and including the journalists reporting on the matter.

Funny how you pick on the maga boaters republican states yet radio silent on democrat states.

Republican states far and away have had very little problems compared to Democrat states yet somehow partisan hacks find them the focus of their ridicule.

The very fact you try and make this a partisan issue is sickening.

And lets not forget, while people are bagging on Trump and Republicans, ONE FIFTH of all deaths in the USA are in the elderly and a direct result of democrat states in the north east forcing nursing homes to take covid patients.

Remember the quote below from trump on March 15th when there were 3,499 cases of Covid and 63 deaths in the US?

“This is a very contagious virus. It’s incredible. But it’s something that we have tremendous control over.”

Well I am not American, and of course this should not be a partisan issue. All the same it is probably worth noting a few facts if you wish to avoid being seen as simpleton.

1) In all countries I have read about, the virus has taken hold in Urban areas first (People are more packed together - greater risk of infection etc)

2) Certainly in the UK and apparently the US also, rural areas tend to be more Conservative (Little c and big C.

3) In rural areas people are more spread out and transmission takes longer, however once it does take hold it takes off just like everywhere else.

4) People in all areas who are advocating rejecting lockdowns, masks, etc are endangering their own and much more importantly, other peoples lives.

5) It appears that many of these groups have been inspired or encouraged by public servants who should be responsible for helping to save lives.

6) It does also appear that many rural states now have rapidly increasing infection rates.

The question that worries me is how on earth the Factory that makes the Darwin Award medals is possibly going to keep up with the demand from such rural states.

So how accurate are China’s Wuhan virus numbers?

As the US has passed this milestone im sure trump has commented about the sad loss of life and begged people to comply with his admins advice to social distance and wear masks and how if we all follow the experts advice we will all get through it.

The Politico news site in the U.S. had a good article in the past day or so on how the federal government under Trump and state and local officials (often Republicans) have been "monkeying" with the CV stats under their control to either hide them from public knowledge or to undercount the bad or overreport the good vs. what's actually going on. Presumably, in attempt to bolster a false Trump narrative that it's OK and safe to get back to life as usual.

Bad state data hides coronavirus threat as Trump pushes reopening

Test counts inflated, death tolls deflated, metrics shifted

Federal and state officials across the country have altered or hidden public health data crucial to tracking the coronavirus' spread, hindering the ability to detect a surge of infections as President Donald Trump pushes the nation to reopen rapidly.

In at least a dozen states, health departments have inflated testing numbers or deflated death tallies by changing criteria for who counts as a coronavirus victim and what counts as a coronavirus test, according to reporting from POLITICO, other news outlets and the states' own admissions.

...

About a third of the states aren’t even reporting hospital admission data — a big red flag for the resurgence of the virus.

Viruses don't give a hoot about political preferences only that they can find a suitable host and multiply.

If the US Fed govt doesn't pull its finger out and put out a national plan for testing, and behavioural procedures then this thing might just move around as we are seeing it begin to do now.

NY and few other states seems to be tapering, while south east in on the rise ... worrying !

But, what can you do with a country where some politicians are ignoring the safety of their peoples for political expediency! And where a large swathe of the people believe the rubbish they are fed by some folks about swallowing disinfectant, not wearing masks, and 'I gotta go to church' ignoring the CDC and in doing so deliberately endangering the lives of others.

What can you do with a large part of the population that can't seem (a large section of the populace anyways) to not engage in bizarre, obvious magical thinking!
