The campaign “Turning Farmers into Professional Online Merchants” organised by the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry in cooperation with Lazada Thailand is seeing success since it sprouted at the beginning of March, Minister Chalermchai Sri-on said.

“Many farmers as well as community enterprises and agricultural cooperatives expressed an interest in joining the programme, which provides e-commerce business training,” he said. “In the past two months these farmers have opened 113 new online shops on Lazada [the country’s leading e-commerce platform], which is expected to increase sales by at least 30 per cent in the next six months.”

Chalermchai attributed the project’s success to the “new normal” brought about by the Covid-19 crisis that has driven people to shift from traditional trade to online shopping to maintain social distancing.

“The ministry is planning to expand the scope of the project by cooperating with more online platforms to cover larger groups of people and increase sales channels. We expect that before the end of June the ministry will sign an MoU in e-commerce promotion with Shopee Thailand too,” he said.

“We are also planning to provide online training courses in e-commerce promotion, online advertising and market expansion via live streaming to farmers, Agriculture Ministry officials and related agencies,” Chalermchai added. “The ministry will later announce future campaigns with Lazada and Shopee, as well as the application period for interested candidates.”
