Is it possible to use True or D-Tac GPRS Internet with an AIS SIM card? I use an AIS pre-paid SIM card and subscribe to the monthly GPRS program. Today I accidentally chose D-Tac Internet when connecting to the Internet. To my surprise it connected. I then dis-connected and chose True Internet and it also connected. I use a Nokia N-80 and when you want to connect to the Internet it give you numerous access points. It asks if you want to search for WLAN and lists all available WLAN connection and also lists GPRS access points. After I connect and look at the detail options it tells me that which point I am connected with.

The question is whether this a quirk with the phone or if I am actually using the other services? It takes no money from my pre-paid but it does deduct the minutes from my GPRS package. I didn't notice and difference in speed.

Unfortunately not Gary...

In your phone are several settings saved for different mobile phone operators.

It just so happens that Dtac, Ais and True's settings needed to connect are the same!

So when you chose dtac, your phone will send he dtac log-in sequence to AIS (since you have an AIS simcard inserted).

And because the Dtac sequence is the same as the one from AIS (dial number is #99 and no username/password required) the connection will be established :o

I figured it was something like that. Just seemed strange at the time. Thanks.

Agreed. The OP was always connecting to AIS/1/-2-Call's GPRS network. Even T-Mobile in the U.S.A. uses the same set-up (*99#, no username or password). AIS/1-2-Call does offer International GPRS roaming now; I received text messages in Japan and the U.S.A. recently detailing the service, so in some cases it is possible to get onto a GPRS network from a provider other than AIS/1-2-Call, but that would not be possible here in Thailand.

Just be careful if using GPRS outside Thailand, the rates are very high compared with the domestic GPRS rates 12Call are charging.

If using 12Call GPRS in:

Singapore 0.4 Baht/kb

UK 2.0 Baht/kb

USA 0.8 Baht/kb

I found to my extreme cost that AIS charges / minute and not by data when roaming in Malaysia.

The 12Call website says 0.7 Baht/kb in Malaysia for GPRS but maybe they charge the 40Baht per minute calling rate on top of that?

Anyway, it is very expensive to use outside Thailand and to work out what it will cost from the nightmare that the 12Call website is is not easy.
