12% of the economy.....yesterday it was as high as 20% & last week was 15%. everyday i read a different percentage  does anyway know? as 12% isnt a lot more than the uk so i except they could take a hit on that till next year but if its as high as 20% thats a big difference.

My understanding is direct tourism accounts for 12% of GDP. if you take into account the industries that directly rely on and support tourism it is at least 20%.

Oooh, sounds expensive. And how, if I may ask, is this going to fit in with Thailand wanting to...   As the past has shown over-abundantly, these "big tour groups" typically stay at touris

Maybe the government should give all those people out of a job the chance to make some money and give them a job to clean up all the beaches and areas around the beaches and a lot of other areas where building sites are leaving all there S@#T laying around everywhere . Cleans up the country and helps people in need .

Its called working for the dole or unemployment money..

China is on the list as '..low risk...'?????! I think that statement in itself says it all.

of course, they are back on to attracting Chinese tourists again. If the list was more accurately named "countries whose money we want" it might make more sense.

Greece just announced they will cover costs if a tourist gets C19..Thailand far to greedy and same won't happen here

you must be from a sh*thole place in the US. Have you had to ever call the police in Thailand?

Actually it was northern Virginia outside of Washington, DC--one of the most expensive areas of the US.  Never had to call the police in Thailand as I have never had a need to.

Just Lure them.  Thatl do it.

If Thailand wants to avoid a serious infection wave then they should keep most European tourists out. I'm stuck in Austria which got a grip on things early and avoided high infection rates because people were disciplined. With bit by bit opening too many think the virus has gone away. Too many ignore rules which are still in place, like no masks in public transport, shops, no distancing.

Does Thailand want tourists with this attitude?

I think they are wishing on a dream. Once the borders are open we ARE going to get new cases being imported, so their goes the trust, and many tourists will be put off by the extreme measures they will probably need to comply with. Add to that many around the world are broke right now so traveling is a low item on the shopping list so any resumption in tourism is likely  to be painfully slow.

Many are indeed broke round the world, and apart from holidays being low down on their list of prioirities, I think the price of air travel is going to escalate, leaving many no choice but to have "stay at home" holidays.

A friend of mine, who is married to a Thai lady, but they both live and work in England, has come to Thailand every year (at the same time of year) for his holidays since he met his wife about 15 years ago. He is probably not coming next year as the fare   on his favourite airline has already gone up by 300 pounds.

No one will go there as no country trusts the lies about their figures (apart from China where their lies are just as bad).

If you do go there expect a 2 week quarantine when you get back. 1 week in Thailand equals 3 weeks of holiday time from your company. No furlough pay for this.

The Thai government have a very limited though process if they think anyone will believe their BS that they are a modern day Shangri La.

No country will undertake a strict lockdown only for a group of brain-dead tourists returning from from Thailand to set it all off again.

Whoever thought that by lying about the figures would make the tourist come back is living in Cuckoo land. It will have the opposite effect. Maybe the stupid will want to go but that quarantine on the return will knock the thought straight out of their head.

They can cry all they like that they are virus free but no normal government believes a word of it.

Perhaps they should target Madagascar and offer complimentary bottles of Covid-Organics (with free lollipops for the kids).

Madagascar's education minister has been fired over plans to order more than $2m (£1.6m) worth of lollipops for schoolchildren to mask the bitter taste of Covid-Organics

How about having Anutin stationed at Swampy, in a dunk tank, begging all incoming tourist to forgive him for the dirty smelly farang comments? Those who can dunk him get free taxi to their hotel.

        Good idea.

Self isolate for 14 days in hotel , not good idea.

I wont be flying for a loong time .

the Tourism Authority of Thailand's (TAT)

part of their weekly misleading topics.... usually they post on Mondays

The Thais can say what they want. Every country that has a tourist trade will be badly hit this year. Next year will be better in Europe as the people out of work get decent benefits/help. Not sure about Asian countries as there is now huge poverty. One thing is sure, holiday makers will not be throwing their money around.

China is trusted? Oh, boy.

Looking forward to seeing on the news about first Chinese tour bus being stoned by locals ????

This same article is now running in Yahoo! News, the liberal media clearinghouse.  You should see the comments section--all negative.  Americans know what the real Thailand has become...

Trusted Thailand???..the biggest oxymoron I have ever seen....once things open up again tourists will be ripped off more than ever with the mindset of making up for losses

New (novel) virus, New Normal, New World... Order.

It's straight from the NWO toolbox, take something that already exists, climate change for instance, happening from the dawn of time, exaggerate it out of all proportion, make it something we have to do something about, introduce new laws and policies all of which always reduce your rights and freedom. In this most recent case, the cornholio, they used the flu. According to all available statistics last years flu was worse than cornholio, as was the year before and so on

Good luck Thailand, I hope you recover by next Winter, which is the earliest I will

be coming to visit again. Glad to see the beaches have reopened, and the restaurants

and a lot of other areas. Some day all the bars and lounges will open and you can

have alcohol with your meals, that will be the day that some tourists may

decide to visit Thailand again.

Geezer

How long can Thailand appease the masses (tourism $ dependent Thais)?  A smattering of "young affluent travelers" arriving won't cut it.

Pssst (in case a TAT rep is reading this)....affluent types (young or mature) know SEA (and the world) is blessed with an abundance of turd free beaches.  They seek more than temples as an entertainment venue and will RESEARCH a safe, trustworthy place to vacation (Re: road deaths, corruption).

"After COVID eases, we plan to refresh the country's image to a trusted destination where tourists will have peace of mind,"

Always funny when officials here don't understand the double meanings they convey in their use of English. Rebranding to a "trusted destination" implies that they have a history of being shifty and untrustworthy and are trying desperately to get rid of it. It's the language peddled by a used car salesman or a dodgy financial advisor.

Even putting emphasis on the word "image" speaks volumes, no marketing agency in the west would ever go public with such a comment. Ethical considerations come a distant second - as long as the image is right and things appear transparent and above board, s'all good man.

Finally! Is this an admission that it has not been a trusted destination to date?

A more simple strategy to restore a lot of the former tourism business would be to eliminate the requirement of the 14-day quarantine for tourists from China and facilitate those types of tour groups to restart. Seems like China would welcome that since Thailand has totally eradicated local transmissions and China has pretty much done the same. Pretty amazing compared to what seems to be happening most other places!
