In an attempt to prevent corruption, pressure is mounting on the government from all sides of society to set up independent ad hoc committees to scrutinise its spending of the Bt1 trillion loan allocated for helping the economy recover from the virus pandemic.

Mana Nimitmongkol, secretary-general of Anti-Corruption Organisation of Thailand, suggested the government set up a panel drawn from civil networks to monitor how the money is used and the transparency of its disbursement.

“They [civil networks] are not stakeholders [in the spending] so they can help ensure the money is spent in the most efficient way,” Mana said. The independent committee could work in parallel with an ad hoc panel to be set up by politicians in the House of Representatives, he added.

Yes would be a great idea for someone to scrutinize the spending of the trillion baht, but where oh where would anybody be found who would be honest/incorruptible to perform the task?

The one major problem being there are no independent bodies in Thailand or locally that would be allowed to monitor this. Everything is controlled and sanctioned from the top.

Thailand is very much its own judge, jury and executioner and we all know which establishment is to blame for that.

Anyone wishing to become members of the independent committee will be thoroughly vetted as to their suitability and therefore honesty through another committee chaired by his worthiness Mr Prayut Chan O Cha whose word will be final.....now you cannot get more fairer than that.....

Pah. Dream on boys and girls. Ain't gonna happen.

The wife says the local poo Yai Ban is the most corrupt guy she knows, but no one will stand against him in an election, as he's family.

That's the attitude here. Don't rock the boat. Eyes down....

If you remember, when PTP were trying to get a 2.2 trillion (ambitious bu$$ers - no pandemic as an excuse either) there were the same cries for scrutiny and transparency; especially as PTP were insisting the spending should be outside of parliament's scrutiny. When challenged the lovely Yingluck commented that this was to "speed up the process, just trust us". 555!

I bet they're green with envy - pun intended!
