Twenty-eight Thai labourers stranded in Uzbekistan after being abandoned by their employer are being flown home under Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's orders.

The departments of Employment and Consular Affairs were tasked with helping the 28 return.

One of them, Kittichai Udom, said they were employed by World Power Service in Uzbekistan, but the company had stopped paying their wages since March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 28 left the Central Asian country on an Uzbekistan Airline flight at 7am and are expected to touch down in Thailand in about 9-10 hours.

The Royal Thai Embassy said expenses for the flight US$410 (Bt12,761.25), food and accommodation between June 4 and 16 total US$204 (Bt6,320) for each, but 21 did not have money for the tickets so they will have to repay the fare within a year.

Did any of these guys attempt to cook up some delicious Thai food prior to his decision? I'm sure they need some Thai cooks and plenty of Thai restaurants.

World Power Service has its office in Bangkok and is a recruitment and staff placement agency - just saying .............

That's handy. I'm totally convinced the head honcho of  WPS will be rushing to the airport with all the back pay the guys are due.

That's the risk you take working for a manpower agency. Happen to me and the company is German...No business - no job, simple as that.

I thought that Thai companies engaged in overseas recruitment had to lodge a guarantee of 500,000 baht in order to obtain a licence and the money was supposed to be used in cases like this?

Why work in Uzbekistan? Surely there would have been jobs for them in Thailand?
