If I understand you correctly you want to remit a certain amount of Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) from you Thai bank account to an Indonesian bank account.

Your Thai bank will give you a form to fill out and sign. This form is your payment order to your bank. You don’t say what bank you use, but it should make no difference. On the form you will have to give the name and number of your bank account, the name, address and number of the beneficiary’s account in Indonesia, the currency (do not write “Roupiah, write IDR”), and the amount. That should take care of it. I do not see where the US dollar enters into it.

if you have a dollar account in indo. then of course the dpollar exchange will be a factor. as i read your post you simply want to tranfer baht to a ruphia account which should be a simplw swift transaction and no dollars concerned.

That's what I thought until I went to the bank (UOB).

They told me that by Thai Law, they need to exchange the Thai Baht to US$ for the transfer, then those dollars should be changed to Rupiah before being deposited on my Indonesian account. Meaning, I'll have to pay a lot of commissions, exchange fees,etc. I'd like to avoid that and am looking for another way of transfering the sum.

I don’t think there is any such law. It could be that UOB has no correspondent bank in Indonesia and for this reason the transfer goes a roundabout way.

I got a similar answer from BBL about a year back when I wanted to transfer thb to a php account in Manila.

Just now recently (last week) a tranfer in thb to Singapore usd account was changed usd in Singapore at the onshore( Thai Xrate) instead of the offshore Xrate (HSBC to HSBC) Have not received yet an answer from HSBC on my queries about this.

Sending $ is the cheapest way. Don't think of taking baht cash with you, in Batam money changers gave 190 rupiah for 1 baht (that was a 20% commission !)
