Thailand had the world's first coronavirus case outside China. Here's how it avoided disaster

The first of those key measures involved the Communicable Disease Control Unit, which is made up of about 1,000 teams distributed all over the country, including about 100 teams that can investigate dangerous pathogens.

"We called those teams in to make sure they were alert," Dr Plipat said.

Stupid post.

Thailand is emerging as another success story in the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is all the more remarkable considering the country was the first outside of China to detect a case of COVID-19 back in January.

We test before you. No need for millions tests if nobody sick.

The latest news coming out of China right now, Beijing specifically, is that the virus has allegedly mutated to become far more infectious and more deadly than the previous strain. It's hard to know if China is lying or just trying to spread more disinformation. So either this virus has still got many more months to run, or China is suffering due to their own draconian lockdown measures coming back to infect those that it missed the first time round.

Oh! Now I get it! Nobody needs to be tested in Thailand because nobody is sick with the virus, here. Now it makes sense. Here I was all along thinking that they should be doing a lot more tests. This is a relief!

Thailand do thousands test everyday. Please do not spread false information More test than Euro countries. And less death.

Twenty countries and regions such as Thailand and South Korea, where authorities were successful in containing the first wave of infections, the stringency index reached 30 when daily new cases were still at 0.45 per 100,000 population.

On the other hand, the remaining 20, including the U.S. and U.K., that failed to contain the virus, cases were already 0.67 when the stringency index reached 30. Thus, the lesson here is that countries need to implement strict policies before cases reach 0.5 per 100,000 people.

It's almost certainly untrue.

"MNT asked Prof. Martin Hibberd, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the U.K., to weigh in on the debate.

“For virologists, ‘strain’ is rather a subjective word that does not always have a clear specific meaning,” he commented.

“More useful in the SARS-CoV-2 situation would be the idea of ‘serotype,’ which is used to describe strains that can be distinguished by the human immune response — an immune response to one serotype will not usually protect against a different serotype. For SARS-CoV-2, there is no conclusive evidence that this has happened yet"

Your issue is that you believe everything you read.

...I mean everything.

Show us the facts that Thousands upon thousands of Thai people are dying of Covid-19. Show us the aerial shots of mass graves in Thailand??

Thorough testing will be required if it is proven that Covid-19 is an issue here.

If you are in Thailand, then you should be safe. If you are not then also, I hope you are safe.

No, actually, it's you and Yinn, who naively believe what you read. I am saying the article heading this thread, and indeed the one posted by Yinn with the two graphs from South Korea and Thailand are completely false. Here's why:

You actually believe the Thai narrative, low Covid 19 figures, so huge success story. Like these naive journalists. In reality nobody, but nobody, has an idea of how many people have died in Thailand of Covid 19, because nobody is doing any meaningful testing in Thailand. If you don't test for Covid 19, how can you know how many died of Covid 19? You can't.

You want facts? Here are the facts:

"The number of deaths in Thailand has been 2% higher than average, with about 2,400 more people dying than usual."

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-53073046

So obviously the nonsense Thai doctors are telling us is completely false. Thailand has not been a success story, there have been as many excess deaths as in many other places. It's just that Covid19 does not need to result in massive numbers of dead or overflowing hospitals, the notion that this automatically has to be the case is false.

However, it is absolutely clear that the numbers Thailand provides are laughable and completely inaccurate. They claim 58 deaths. In reality the likely death toll in Thailand from Covid 19 is closer to the 2400 mark, which is very comparable to other countries. No huge success story here.

Well, of course compared to French Guiana Thailand has tested more. Indeed Thailand was among the first to test, and indeed among the first to publish the genome. However, Thailand has consistently distinguished itself by being among the countries that has tested the least among countries with sizeable populations. Just like Japan.

Obviously if you don't test for Covid 19 on a meaningful scale then you do not know the scale of Covid 19 cases, you do not know how many have died of Covid 19.

If you seriously believe 58 have died of Covid 19 in Thailand then please explain where the 2400 excess deaths in Thailand during the Covid 19 pandemic come from? Just pure coincidence I take it?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-53073046

To put your figure of tests in Thailand in perspective, Thailand has tested about 4294 people per 1 million people. You say Thailand tests more than European nations. By comparison Iceland has tested 100,000 per million. So Thailand 4294 per 1 million, Iceland 100,000 per 1 million.

This is why the article you posted is useless, it takes Thailand's figures at face value, when they are completely useless. If Thailand really had only 58 deaths from Covid 19, explain the excess 2400 Thais who have died during the Covid 19 pandemic. Sheer coincidence then? Thailand is NOT the success story it is billed as. Sorry.

Again...don’t believe all you read.

I have heard enough from the inept Western governments spouting their rhetoric from so called experts who have got it expertly wrong.

Cold hard facts are what you need. Pictures, movie clips showing the massive pandemic spread in Thailand. You or no one else are able to provide this.

I have seen all the clips and pictures evidently showing the problem in the west.

I remember someone started a thread a month or so ago asking if others here have had any symptoms from Nov to Dec. It was amazing how many responded by saying yes, including chest rstrictions and a dry itchy cough. I aslo admit to these symptoms at that time. Maybe, just maybe, the Covid strain in Thailand and neighbouring countries was much weaker than in Europe, You have to admit that if things were as bad here as in Italy, UK, USA, Brazil etc, we, and the world, would know about it. Certainly Facebook posts would be red hot.

My point is that Thailand does not appear to have been ravaged by the pandemic regardless of testing or no testing.

We can agree to disagree because I do not take all these internet reports, graphs etc very seriously.

You don't get more cold and hard facts than the excess number of 2400 deaths that Thailand has had during the Covid 19 pandemic. If you refuse to accept irrefutable evidence from the BBC then that's up to you, but don't say there are no cold hard facts that prove that Thailand's death figure is a total joke.

The figure of 2400 excess deaths is btw very comparable to other countries, not every country has to have "ravage" style figures or overflowing hospitals. In fact only 0.8% of the population get the virus, and the hospitalisation rate is a fraction thereof, the death figure another fraction thereof. In Thailand's case most likely 2400 deaths.

The BBC-UK are the same as any other country in that they will use propaganda to protect their own failings. One of the reasons I left the UK 25 years ago (Another story).

However, I will hypothesise with you by saying, if the figures in the link were to be true and you added the excess deaths with the official Covid count then Thailands total death rate of around 3,000, being of a similar population to the UK has faired far better than the UK total of 70,000 plus.

Very interesting.  Very interesting indeed.  Very interesting that you screen shotted all of that stuff but somehow the last paragraph of the BBC report just below that didn't make it in to your image.  All of the bits that fit your narrative made it but the bit that didn't didn't.   What a shame.

Let me help so people can see the bit you accidentally missed.  This was the next paragraph after yours mysteriously cut off - about deaths spiking in March (which is when the government figures spiked) but then returning to normal in April and May when we had the lockdown and government figures dropped.  Don't you hate it when screen grabs miss bits off?  It's so annoying!!  Just right below your last paragraph was this one little remaining thing that didn't quite make it - grrrrrr, stupid computers!

The BBC in the UK is not perpetrating a giant propaganda hoax by taking the official Thai death figures, come on.

Of course Thailand has fared better than the UK, pretty much everyone has. But that does not change the fact that the supposed success story Thailand is selling is based on a wholly false premise.

Interesting, here's a thought.

Lets not forget about all the people who did NOT die due to traffic accidents during times of restricted movement, I believe those figures will be available somewhere.

To get the excess deaths you would normally compare year on year figures for all causes of death - including the traffic accidents.

This year is very different as the death rate on the roads has apparently dropped - a lot, I read it on here in the news section some time back.

That makes any 'excess death' numbers potentially much worse because there should in fact have been a reduction of thousands of deaths due to 'the lockdown' period of a few months.

So the 2400 excess figure could be several times lower than it really is when you factor in the large reduction in deaths on the roads.

I can't be bothered to look up the numbers, largely because I don't really care that much one way or the other.

Exactly the same thought occurred to me as well.

That's an excellent point.

Doesn't this support his argument?

Is there anywhere that I can view the excess deaths chart for the October 2019 to May 2020 period?

In Europe they have the 'EuroMOMO' MOrtality MOnitoring charts here : https://www.euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps/

Perhaps there's something similar for the ASEAN countries?

Brilliant theory, Yinn & Joseph.

You have the brass balls audacity to dare suggest that I'm lying, when I posted the actual BBC article that has the entire data? How on earth am I lying you malicious slanderer, point to the lie or admit your evil slander.

I posted very clear information from the BBC, which used Thailand's death figures that shows that Thailand had 2400 excess deaths during the Covid 19 pandemic. Nothing about that is a lie. The lie is that Thailand only had 58 deaths from Covid 19.

Dr Tuner and log get very excited about “extra” 2,400 deaths two months.

so 1,200 for one month.

40 per day.

=less than one “extra” per province per day.

this really nothing. Death is random. Less than one per day, is nothing. Can be many reason.

First say mask not work, lockdown not work, etc etc. But wrong. Thailand famous the world success fight covid (the op talk about many reason why)

Now they try safe the face.

Sad.
