Twitter again slaps warning on Trump tweet threatening force against protesters

FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump taps the screen on a mobile phone at the approximate time a tweet was released from his Twitter account, during a roundtable discussion on the reopening of small businesses in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington, U.S., June 18, 2020. (Reuters) - Twitter Inc on Tuesday placed a warning notice on a tweet by President Donald Trump threatening "serious force" against protesters in the U.S. capital, the second time it has used the label since it began challenging Trump's tweets in May.

"There will never be an 'Autonomous Zone' in Washington, D.C., as long as I'm your President. If they try they will be met with serious force!" the president said in his tweet, which Twitter said violated its policy against abusive behavior.

Trump posted the message after anti-racism protesters on Monday declared a "Black House Autonomous Zone" - referencing a Seattle area taken over by activists known as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP) or Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone - in front of St. John's Episcopal Church near the White House.

Police cleared the White House area on Tuesday and blocked access to the site, where law enforcement had used violence to disperse protesters earlier this month.

Twitter said it hid Trump's tweet behind its "public interest" notice because it included a threat of harm against an identifiable group. The label restricts distribution of tweets by public officials which violate Twitter's rules, while leaving them online to allow for scrutiny.

A Twitter spokeswoman said teams within the company's safety division informed Chief Executive Jack Dorsey of the decision before applying the notice.

Facebook, which has taken a more hands-off approach to speech by political leaders, left the same post untouched.

At least 150,000 people had liked Trump's tweet and 33,000 retweeted it before Twitter restricted engagement, according to the most recent image captured by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. His post on Facebook received 12,000 comments.

The warning escalated Twitter's challenge to Trump, who has used the platform unimpeded for years to rally supporters and deride opponents.

After the company last month started applying labels to his messages, Trump announced plans to scrap or weaken a law that has protected internet companies in order to regulate social media platforms more aggressively.

Twitter's first public interest notice against Trump also involved a threat of force against protesters, who have been demonstrating against racial injustice since the May 25 death of George Floyd, a Black man, in police custody.

Trump had used the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" to threaten deadly force against protesters in Minneapolis, where Floyd died.

Twitter said that message violated its rules against "glorifying violence." It has also appended fact-checking and manipulated media labels to Trump's tweets in the last month.

The absurdity of twitters open bias is not even deniable at this point, and the right has been saying it for years.

You guys cheer it on because its a guy you hate, not because its right - but just wait until they start coming for you and your side - because they will. Might now be now, but it'll happen eventually and when it does you wont be getting much support.

Just ban him entirely.  It would be entertaining.

Dont you love the standard Pro Trump lover saying “ just because you hate “ Mr Trump” or “our President”.
And Ignoring all the laws he breaks and Proven lies that flow freely from him. And now , not to mention the ABUSE of Justice. Even his dog Barr has been condemned by his own law school. Vehemently.

God help America . The Democrats seem to be idiots. That Debt will be one hell of a bomb.

Not hate, but no respect for an individual who's messaging is 'not right'.

My concern for Americans and for the world in general is trump winning another four years due to his unrepentant efforts to undermine Constitutional checks and balances and the Rule of Law.

The federal government cannot enforce "local" laws. Classic separation of state and federal authority normally cherished by the GOP. But not by the wanna-be  authoritarian Trump regime.

If "Twitter" were a newspaper it might publish readers letters.

It might choose not to publish any readers letter.

It's choices would reveal its bias.

Nothing new about that, it has been the way of the print media since pre-Hearst days.

Freedom of the media in the US means that the media may choose to publish, televise (see Fox News), or disseminate on the internet, many different opinions.........it's "up to them".

It may also choose not to publish, televise (see Fox News), or disseminate on the internet, some of those opinions.

Problem for the Right is that it doesn't control Twitter in the way that it controls other media (see Fox news).

God Bless America.

You ever heard of the National Guard?

I would rather have the National Guard patrolling and protecting property and people any day over violent mobs of anarchists and communists and straight-up raw looters any day of the week.

You can not just tear <deleted> down because you want to, and allowing it to happen is an absurd injustice.

Cool thing about this post is that you accidentally hit the nail on the head and you didn't even mean to and in an opposite way than you intended.

Twitters actions and the laws they operate under are contrarian. The claim to be a platform, which provides them certain level cover, but operate as a publisher - which you accidentally noted.

Being a platform requires neutrality by law, which they clearly do not have any intention of following.

State National Guards were assembled primarily for domestic natural disasters and civil disturbance. This clearly falls into the latter. Bush introduced them to Iraq and Afghanistan only because he didn't have a draft to fall back on and Congress ….thankfully ..didn't give him one.

Maybe dont riot and destroy sh*t and nobody has to worry about that?

Besides, the left has killed enough of their own and others over the last few weeks and destroyed an untold number of property, and likely seeded the second wave of coronavirus, so I think it might be time to wrap it up before anyone else gets hurt.

No sympathy for rioters, looters and also shooters from the left and right. The police will deal with them with full weight of the law. They represent a small portion of the peaceful protesters waiting for the right messaging and corrective policies from the leaders to stop demonstrating. The one with the biggest microphone should lead in the unification but sadly he is more a provocateur than a healer.

Does that include the rioters illegally toppling statues as they see fit?

Sounds perfect for trump - a platform for the alt right and others. Parler exists as an echo chamber for hard-right views. It’s easy to find anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and pro-conspiracy theory hashtags

To state that it is illegal, you got to state the law. Even the little known Veterans' Memorial Preservation Act only contain loosely-connected provisions for grave desecration and destruction of federal property. Something that Trump loosely threaten and lack concrete substance.

You.... Honestly have not been following the news over the last few weeks? Before I 'back it up' as you petulantly demand, I just want to know if you disbelieve my statement so I can gauge how out of touch you are.

Personally I haven't read or heard of multiple murders that have been attributed to the 'left' by law enforcement investigators over the past few week. So 'yes',  let's hear from you with credible links - thanks

Just so we are clear, you are seriously going to try and argue that mobs going around toppling statues is..... Legal?

Situational awareness clearly not your strong point then. The almost Pavlovian response to Fox News by anyone who opposes Trump. Wake up and look around you. Think about what you are saying. You basically just inferred (correctly) that the Left control Twitter. If you open your eyes a little wider, you might see that the Left control most other mainstream media including but not limited to Facebook, Google (incl Youtube), CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, NY Times, Washington Post, Comcast, AT&T, Hollywood, ESPN, NBA, NFL, Late Night TV, etc etc etc. But yes that dastardly Fox is controlled by the RIght. Get 'em !!!

As opposed to Twitter, MSM et al who are an echo chamber for hard-left views ?? Why is one acceptable but not the other ?? Again, a total lack of awareness of what is going on around you and what you are actually advocating. If you want to find "Anti Semitic" and "Conspiracy Theory" content, please look no further than the fake news media and Democrat Party.

Perhaps you would do better by getting your news and information from sources that are not pursuing an agenda. And I saw what you did there, another trait oft used by the left, you are implying that you will not believe any links which YOU do not deem to be credible. Hilarious.

The president can tweet whatever and whenever he wants. Are you advocating otherwise ? The reason the left constantly whine and drone on about Trump using Twitter is because it is harder for them to spin or in some cases not report what he says. As Trump himself said recently, he would give up Twitter immediately if the press reported fairly and accurately.

Even this Reuters article is dishonest. And I quote; "Trump had used the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" to threaten deadly force against protesters in Minneapolis, where Floyd died".  This is not only a lie, but to quote an oft used Reuters line, it was "cited without evidence". It is just another example of how the fake news media twist and spin his words for their own agenda.
